Summary
1907: A world of steam and steel, of brass and bravery. Spaceships ply the lanes above the Earth, running on coke furnaces and a prayer, while the atomic-powered Circumferential Rail runs the route between Paris, France, and Houston, Texas. Where there is cargo, and passengers of means, pirates soon follow, and this is how Jonathan Orbital, heir to the Circumferential Rail finds himself embroiled in a conspiracy surrounding a kidnapped French woman with a valuable secret.
Enter the roguish space pirate Phinneas Greaves, who kidnaps the beautiful and intelligent Cecilie Renault off the Circumferential Rail in order to deliver her father's research to the highest bidder. The smitten Jonathan will stop at nothing to rescue her, but both men soon learn the global implications of the woman's knowledge, and they are forced to wage harrowing battles across the Big Black of space and the dusty landscapes of the American West, with the only certainty being that those who want to exploit this revolutionary technology will stop at nothing to acquire it.

Kidnapping in space
I enjoyed this book. It is very different to what I normally listen to but it is action packed and with a number of twists that caught and held my interest until the very end. The reason I liked it was because of the contrast between the two main male characters, that worked very well. The steampunk aspect to the story was interesting, especially combining space travel with the wild West. It's a standalone book that is sure to stretch the imagination.
Jonathan Orbital is a well known face in the rail industry because his father was behind the ground breaking technology that made it possible. So it is not unusual to find him traveling aboard but what is unusual is the fact that pirates attack the train taking not only valuables but also a hostage. A French woman who's father is just as famous as Jonathan's. The roguish space captain will do anything for a quick buck especially if it means he can run repairs on his ship. As well as Jonathan the space pirate falls under her spell but when he is double crossed by his own men he has to join forces with the billionaire in order to rescue the girl. A race and battle across space ensues but who will come out on top?
I liked the narrator. I had no problems tell the characters apart because he used very distinct and different sounding voices for each of them.
