About this listen

The Earl of St. Merryn needs a woman. His intentions are purely practical - he simply wants someone sensible and suitably lovely to pose as his betrothed for a few weeks among polite society. He has his own agenda to pursue, and a false fiancée will keep the husband-hunters at bay while he goes about his business. The simplest solution is to hire a paid companion. Finding the right candidate proves more of a challenge than he expected. But when he encounters Miss Elenora Lodge, the fire in her golden eyes sways him to make a generous offer. Her sorry financial circumstances - and dreams of a life of independence - convince her to accept. But St. Merryn appears to be hiding a secret or two, and things seem oddly amiss in his gloomy London home. Elenora soon discovers that this lark will be a far more dangerous adventure than she'd been led to believe. And the Earl of St. Merryn will find that the meek and mild companion he'd initially envisioned has become a partner in his quest to catch a killer - and an outspoken belle of the ball who stirs a bothersome passion in his practical heart.

The Paid Housekeeper.

Intriguing story. Recommend reading as it’s such a great read. You won’t be disappointed. Not quite how things work out .

Grown up Regency

Such a pleasure to have adult characters and a heroine who doesn't climax when she surrenders her virginity. The sex is pertinent to the story and is not gratuitous or overdone. The narrator's performance is wonderful.

Another American narrator!

I enjoyed the story and the narrator was good on the whole. However the mispronunciation of key and repeated words - buttocks, inquiries, Hathersage - was really grating! And the use of the Fall for Autumn in a clearly British story was ridiculous! It all spoilt an otherwise very good Audible production

Well paced with a bit of everything

Story was funny .. loved the banter between the characters. The supporting characters of Margaret, Bennet and the rest didn’t disappoint.

Bianca’s narration was great but it sounds even better at 1.2x speed.

All in all, a great listen for a lazy day.

Lovely cosy listen with a good bit of murder mystery.

Great example of a regency romance where the relationships actually feel realistic.

Very plesant listen and an enjoyable narrator. it was fast paced without being overdone, and I enjoyed it very much as a casual listening book while I work or do house chores.

Characters are engaging and relatably human.

A wonderful story

I love this author and have read all of her historical romances, this is the first audiobook though. The narrator takes a bit of getting used to but she becomes an intrinsic part of the characters. I do recommend this as a start into the world of Amanda Quick

Exquisitely Made

The perfectly delivered perfectly paced narration enhances the enjoyable, enteraining, drama of this delightful tale, well set in period and style. The small "Americanisms" do not hamper the flow, and only grate fractionally to English ears.

Such a well scripted mystery with carriage loads of humour to egg up the genre in a most enjoyable way. It was refreshing to have a backdrop of science and archaic experimentation, rather than frivolous nonsense, over dramatized with angst. The description of interiors, art, and vestments/costume add so much depth and detail. Excellent dialogue.

If you enjoy Stella Riley or Georgette Heyer, you will enjoy this. A FACINATING DALLIANCE
