Richard Adams, the author of Watership Down, creates a lyrical and engrossing tale, a remarkable journey into the hearts and minds of two canine heroes, Snitter and Rowf. After being horribly mistreated at a government animal-research facility, Snitter and Rowf escape into the isolation - and terror - of the wilderness. Aided only by a fox they call "the tod", the two dogs must struggle to survive in their new environment. When the starving dogs attack some sheep, they are labeled ferocious, man-eating monsters, setting off a great dog hunt that is later intensified by the fear that the dogs could be carriers of the bubonic plague.

the great reading of the life of the plague dogs
loved this story, it was told in such a way as to carry me into the life of Ralph and Snitter and their adventure. Ralph Cosham is a superb narrator with the ability of bringing words to life. Thank you to all that brought this story to life and continue to bring joy to many people.

Thought provoking. Even better second time round.

I read this years ago as a teenager and loved it but look on it with completely different eyes now.
Interesting how he gave a lot of time and credit to Peter Scott.

Worth staying to the end .
Very satisfying ending . Thought provoking and definitely better than Shardik ! . Good performance but the quality of sound would change every so often . Didn’t ruin it in anyway but just not quite perfect.

Outstanding - what lessons contained within
I'd wanted to revisit this book for some time as it was one of my late Dad's favourites from childhood and provoked a lifelong love of the lake district.
By the end I was in tears as it is such a beautiful book as many of Richard Adams' are.
There are so many lessons we should have learned from books like this in the last decades and much like Lord of the Flies is one that should be revisited as a timely reminder bot to follow the herd, to think independently, to find our own center of what is right .... and then act on it! I can't recommend it enough, whether simply reading for pleasure or for its still relevant analogies to the current craziness in this world.

Great story, perhaps longer than it needed to be
A lovely (if sometimes a bit bleak!) story, well narrated. Some stretches would have benefitted from more ruthless editing.

I'll be honest, it took me a while to like this book. At first I felt it was a bit boring and I just didn't get it. but as I got along further, it really grew on me, and in the end it had me in tears. A beautiful and tragic story.

A tide of emotion
One of the saddest books I've ever listened to. A battleship of emotion. I am now going to watch the film to see how it compares. It was a wonderful story. I loved every minute.

Many emotions experienced
All I can say without giving it away, is that you'll experience a spectrum of emotions while listening to this book. I have a deep love for all amimals and this book has only helped solidified that love.

Awesome story
Every book by Richard Adams is well worth reading so I would recommend this book to all, young and old. It’s a little sad in places so have a hankie nearby. Great narrator too.

A must, particularly if you like dogs
Wow, what a story. Wonderfully narrated, the characters of Snitter and Ralph are brought to life with Adams' amazing descriptive talent. I didn't want it to end and willed the dogs on throughout. A must read/listen.
