About this listen

He was a survivor - a wanderer who traded tales for food and shelter in the dark and savage aftermath of a devastating war.

Fate touches him one chill winter’s day when he borrows the jacket of a long-dead postal worker to protect himself from the cold. The old, worn uniform still has power as a symbol of hope, and with it he begins to weave his greatest tale, of a nation on the road to recovery.

This is the story of a lie that became the most powerful kind of truth. A timeless novel as urgently compelling as War Day or Alas, Babylon, David Brin’s The Postman is the dramatically moving saga of a man who rekindled the spirit of America through the power of a dream, from a modern master of science fiction.

A book I would never have tried without Unlimited

I absolutely loved this!!
the narration has some irrelevant pauses but once you get used to the tempo you will love this original story that had me gripped

better than the film

Great book which bares no resemblance to the film. A TV series of this, if kept accurate, would work well

The Postie

I saw the movie years ago and had no idea it was based on a book.
The story is generally good: great start but then there are a lot of elements that makes me think it would have been better if it was kept simple.

Great performance, very convincing and variable for different characters.

Still Relevant

Good reader.
Despite the antiquated kinds of modern technology, it is an old book, this story seems more relevant than ever.

Mixed feelings.

If i could combine what i do like about film and what i do like about the book..and leave what i dislike about each, a sort of hybrid..you'd have a really good postman. Both film and book are very different and have thing's i do and don't like about each.
well performed, interesting story somewhat simulatenous dated yet still relevant..
Can't quite decide if it's an adventure story, academic piece, philosophy, drama, pulp, high brow or low brow..or none of the above.
Fun in places but does drag on in places too.
The tone is a bit muddled and jumpy but certain plenty of pause for thought.

Interesting ideas, lacklustre writing

Saw the Kevin Costner movie years ago, heard the novel is better.

There are certainly some very interesting ideas here, but they are let down by lacklustre writing. The third act felt whimsical and Brin appears to have lost interest in his own story at that point. Would have been better if the second and third acts were swapped round.

Always good to hear in depth the book behind the movie

Always good to hear in depth the book behind the movie. Interestingly even apt for 2023 with attitudes towards female empowerment and the legacy left behind by the heroines, all not included in the original movie in my recollection.

my favourite book

it surprises most when I tell people this is my favourite book. Thile story captures the most powerful of simple life facts, that an idea can grow from small beginnings, into something alive.

Thought-provoking read

A thought-provoking extrapolation of the various polarized binaries existing in the US today, which made me wonder about its resilience and sustainability. Very enjoyable.
