Summary

In June 1973 the bodies of three missing teenagers were found on the tiny Scottish island of Fidra. And when his father is arrested for the murders, 11-year-old Miller McAllister's life fell apart. 32 years later, Douglas Mcallister has died in prison and Miller returns home after decades of self-imposed exile. Because, though the rest of his family prostested Douglas' innocence, Miller always maintained his guilt. But when Miller is given a letter his father wrote to him before his death, suddenly everything looks less clear. Could Douglas have been innocent after all? And if he didn't kill the girls... who did?

Critic reviews

"Walker pulls out all the stops in this terrific story. She ratchets up the tension, keeps the clues deftly hidden, and keeps the reader glued to the page." (The Globe and Mail

Unexpected ending

I thoroughly enjoyed this book which was very well read and the voices and accents really well done.
It is quite long but the way the story builds and it all comes together is very skilful and whilst I had some suspicions the final reveal was still surprising.

The Reckoning

Really good story. I nearly gave up though because the narrator was so slow and boring.

This story was really addictive!

I just thought that this is a story that could have happened to any family!!! It is a wonderful journey through the 1970s. Throughout this story, I kept asking myself, what if that had happened to me and my father.

It is a truly realistic journey to the reader that takes you to the depths of a serial killer.

Sandra , Newark

As i have spent the past 2 days listening to the story, I can honestly say I couldnt put it down . I did however guess 'who done it' early on but that didnt spoil the enjoyment of an new author to me. the narative twisted and turned and the atmospheric landscape of the scotish east coast came through in the excellent speaker .

keep with it

even thought it's long winded in some ways and the true killer is obvious (well at least to me it was and others from the reviews) stick with it!
Beautiful imagery of the Scotland wilds which for someone who has a great affinity with the landscape was like being back there.
I've given the story an overall 4 star purely because I did have to grit my teeth at the glacier progress of the storyline.

Best book in ages

I have been getting a bit disillusioned with recent books. This however was well written and had me hooked. The reader was great, just right for the story. I felt so sorry for Miller and his family badly affected by the events and found myself trying to understand how his father could have committed such dreadful crimes. It was a sad story but peace was found at the end for the family.
Thoroughly enjoyed and looked for more by this author but sadly this seems to be the only one on audible.

Fab Story that keeps you guessing

OK, so I did guess the ending about half way through and I worked out the other party early on BUT there's so many twists and turns it does make you question your decisions! Good story if not a little long winded. The only slightly annoying aspect is the weird pauses in places and the beginning of chapters where it sounds like the narrator is swallowing a drink and flipping through pages.... but it's nothing to off putting.

Wonderful narrator

I loved JonathanHackett’s narration for this book. Just perfect. The book. However was simply average. Very very drawn out and predictable. I guessed the outcome very early on. The writing was good though, very evocative, and as a Scot who is familiar with East Lothian I very much enjoyed the setting. Only one area of annoyance was the narrator’s pronunciation of Catriona. It is not Cat- Tree - Ona as he pronounced it but Cat - Treen - a!

Good book

I unfortunately figured out 'who done it' in the first hour, but that didn't stop me enjoying the rest of the book.
It's well written and well read, although it took me a little while to get used to Jonathan Hackett's accent!
I'd definitely listen to a Sue Walker book again.

A Good Storyline

This is my first book by this Author and although I knew the 'who' fairly early on...I did enjoy the detail of the background behind it. Although the narration could have been so much more, it is very atmospheric and a worthy listen.
