About this listen

"The Reformatory is one of those books you can't put down. Tananarive Due hit it out of the park."—Stephen King

A gloriously creepy Deep South horror story based on the infamous Dozier School for boys, perfect for fans of The Only Good Indians and Nothing But Blackened Teeth.

Jim Crow Florida, 1950.

Twelve-year-old Robert Stephens Jr., who for a trivial scuffle with a white boy is sent to The Gracetown School for Boys. But the segregated reformatory is a chamber of horrors, haunted by the boys that have died there.

In order to survive the school governor and his Funhouse, Robert must enlist the help of the school's ghosts–only they have their own motivations...

Beautiful story and narration

Thoroughly enjoyed this book, 5 stars for all elements but I think the narration was maybe some of the best I’ve ever heard, captured the characters so well and well paced.
Highly recommend

A haunting tale of friendship, injustice and a families bond to be together.

a well crafted novel by the aurthur set in the Jim era where the characters face injustice from their town in the state of Florida. an endearing story of a young set of siblings left to fend for themselves. The brother finds himself in bother with the local sheriff after a altercation with a prodomant figures son on the property boundaries of the land the the boy in the reformatiry. A place where punishment is severe and rules must be obeyed and has a sordid hidden past. The story has well rounded characters that will draw you in as you uncover the hidden secrets along the way with them. The slow build up builds up and then paces along as the story unfolds. I found myself engrossed in ever chapter and wished it was longer. The author has used well crafted narrative and has drawn on their own experiences to give this stor life. 5 stars to the narrator for an outstanding performance on the characters giving each one rounded personalities. would definitely recommend this book.
