I loved the story as I could relate to so much of it. The army jargon, the joining up and basic training at a young age. Resettlement at the end. My only issue was it got a little monotone towards the end

Too many have over described the SAS and almost devalued it for the cost of sales, this account however gives enough detail to engage but keeps the air of mystique around the operators.
Maybe contains the phrase “went for a few beers” too often

It is an OK book but it lacked something I found it difficult to keep track on the story and felt like it jumped around a bit.

A Great Insight

As a former Infantry soldier in the 1970’s I thoroughly enjoyed this book, clearly written by an old warrior, covering his childhood leading up to joining the British Army as a boy soldier, through training and time spent with the Royal Marines, before detailing the selection process and his fifteen years in the SAS.
As one of the Iranian embassy siege assault team, through operations and conflicts around the world including Northern Ireland and the Falklands War, this was akin to one old soldier talking to another, as an old infantryman I could relate to much of the content and I was fascinated to hear about his SAS experiences.
Well worth your time if you are interested in the military!

A fascinating, no nonsense account of a full and varied life in the Regiment. It would have been even better if narrated by Rusty, but still very engaging. Definitely worth a listen for anyone interested in what makes SF operators tick 👍

Having read many memoirs on modern military history Rusty’s book is a real pleasure to read linking key characters and events across his time in the Special forces. It is honest talking and leads with no exaggeration whilst Dean Williamson’s performance fits a similar voice profile to Rusty’s. I can’t tell you how enjoyable it is to listen to an account that doesn’t include a figure blowing ones own trumpet to kingdom come and Rusty at times brings out a comical smile with how plainly he tells it.

Overall: A legend talking about legends whilst maintaining his humble self throughout.
