About this listen

Granada's cobbled streets resonate with music and secrets and Sonia Cameron is here to dance. She knows nothing of the city's past. But in a quiet café, a chance conversation and a collection of photographs draws her into the tale of Spain's devastating civil war.

Seventy years earlier, the café is home to the Ramírez family, when Franco's army coup shatters the fragile peace and they witness the worst atrocities of conflict. Divided by politics and tragedy, everyone must take a side, as Spain rips itself apart.

Critic reviews

"Aims to open the eyes, and tug the heartstrings, of readers... Hislop deserves a medal for opening a breach into the holiday beach bag." (Independent)

"Like a literary Nigella, she whips up a cracking historical romance with a dash of family secrets and a splash of female self-discovery." (Time Out)

"Powerful stuff." (Daily Mail)

"Hislop somehow manages to capture the chaos and disintegration of Spain during the violence of the '30s and '40s in a dramatic, immediate way...keeps you reading at breakneck speed right to the end." (Sunday Express)

Brilliantly written and I could visualise every scene and feel every emotion with each character's life. I had no idea of the plight of such families during these desperate times.

Moving and emotional.

This is the second book I have listened to with this narrator unfortunately she does not do her homework on pronunciation of Turkish or Spanish names Ignacio is pronounced Ignathio and not iniathio and Emine is pronounced Eminer not Emeen it sort of spoilt the book for me although I loved the story ........ sorry to be so picky just thought a little bit of research before reading might help !!!

I loved this book, even though I found the love story bit just a little bit far fetched. I learned so much about the spanish civil war which I knew little about and found this really interested. Its a tragic love story but still manages to leave you feeling very satisfied. Overall I would say if you like Hislop's books then read this one.

Another Great book from Victoria Hislop !

If you could sum up The Return in three words, what would they be?

Captivating, enchanting, atmospheric

Any additional comments?

This was a really good read and gripping all the way through. Jane Wymark's narration is particularly good and kept me drawn in throughout the story.

Beautifully written, superbly narrated

Took me a while to get into this and I don’t know if I would have persevered if I had been reading instead of listening. However I got to the point where it began to hold my interest. I then learned so much that I never knew about the Spanish civil war and the treatment given to the Republicans by Franco and his supporters. It is a great way to listen to ‘Faction’. Wrapping history up in the personal lives of the characters makes it, in my opinion, much easier to understand and to identify with.

Slow Burner
