About this listen
From Britain's 'master of horror', Adam Nevill, comes The Ritual, winner of the August Derleth Award and perfect for fans of Stephen King. Now a major film with Rafe Spall.
In The Ritual, four old university friends reunite for a hiking trip in the Scandinavian wilderness of the Arctic Circle. No longer young men, they have little left in common and tensions rise as they struggle to connect. Frustrated and tired, they take a shortcut that turns their hike into a nightmare that could cost them their lives.
Lost, hungry and surrounded by forest untouched for millennia, they stumble across an isolated old house. Inside, they find the macabre remains of old rites and pagan sacrifices; ancient artefacts and unidentifiable bones. A place of dark ritual and home to a bestial presence that is still present in the ancient forest, and now they're the prey.
As the four friends struggle toward salvation they discover that death doesn't come easy among these ancient trees....

Great story...intensely written
I found that reviews of this book were great or terrible, with little in between. Some felt it was badly organized into 2 stories. Some complained about length, philosophizing and droning on.
My take...the book is the thoughts of a highly intelligent, somewhat misanthropic non-conformist. The perception is how his mind digests and analyzes his world.
Instead of the typical story formula, of problem character introduction, drama, romance, couple drama, triumph. This story, which is really quite creative, is completely immersed in the thinking process of such an individual.
The long drawn out analyses of the relationships of the characters, their behaviors, conflicts and challenges are dissected by his mind.
If you want a simple storyline presentation, put this book back on the shelf.
I did NOT find that this was two separate books with a sudden shift in plotline at all. I found it was a long and intentionally painful descent into hell followed by the experience once the hero got to his destination.
Nice quality horror. Nordic mythology is present but not overly explained. I loved it.

Terrifying
I wanted a scary listen at Halloween and this audiobook certainly delivered. It is a totally absorbing story, with excellent characterisation and a slowly developing creepiness that descends into total horror. Fully recommend if you fancy a bit of a fright!

Unrelenting Horror
Full of horror and tension. A book I could not stop listening to, it grows and grows and grows into an incredible conclusion. Very different to the film, you will not be disappointed.

Simply one of the best horror novels of all time.
I loved this book, read it twice. The film is OK too. This narration is truly excellent. David Thorpe is beyond good. His grasp of accents and very obvious love if the material make this a truly superb experience.
I genuinely hope Thorpe has narrated more of this and other authors.

Disappointing
Basically it's two stories and whilst it was good it just went on and on and on. Characters were good and the narrator gave a good performance but the story could have been cut shorter with no loss to it. The ending was really a bit something and nothing. Sorry, just not really for me.

took an unexpected turn
was expecting the novel to come to an end when it started with part 2! this was a good and entertaining listen although the narrator was perhaps a bit chirpy for the subject matter, but you get used to him

great 1st half
the book starts amazingly best horror book I've ever listened to. unfortunately once it reaches part two the book turns into an unlistenable slog. which is such a shame because the entire first half starts so strong
