About this listen

In this highly anticipated new novel, Diana Gabaldon brings back one of her most compelling characters: the unforgettable Lord John Grey - soldier, gentleman, and no mean hand with a blade. Set in the heart of the 18th century, Lord John's world is one of mystery and menace. Diana Gabaldon brilliantly weaves together the strands of Lord John's secret and public lives.

Capturing the lonely, tormented, and courageous career of a man who fights for his crown, his honor, and his own secrets, Diana Gabaldon delivers breathtaking human drama, proving once again that she can bring history to life in a way few novelists ever have.

There are two narrators and they switch between themselves with no apparent reason, causing confusion. The Scottish accent is grating and dour, which Jamie isn’t in the books and is indistinguishable from the Irish accents. The supposed English accent shows traces of American eg ‘corfee’ for coffee. It’s minor but grating.

Fabulous story, poor performance

Couldn't continue with this audible. Found the accents awful. I'll read it instead as I'm sure I'll enjoy the story.

Unfinished

The story was ok no real suspense. The relationship between Jamie and lord Gray evolved and had good understanding of their unusual friendship. Good humour now and then. The narrator for Lord Gray was excellent and just how I imagine him
Overall enjoyable but not the best

Enjoyable disappointing

Loved the story and found it hard to stop listening, as tends to be the case with the Outlander/Lord John stories. But why on earth they got Rick Holmes to do part of the narration is beyond me... Terrible accent and not what you'd expect Jamie to sound like! What's wrong with Jeff Woodman narrating the whole book like the other Lord John novels?!

Two narrators - not working for me!

I’ve listen to all books of Lord John Gray; but this has been the best without doubt. The performances, accents, voices and rhythm are perfect, it has been a true delight and I plan on listening to it all over again once I get a decent, good quality pair of big headphones to have an even more immersive experience. 5 stars!!!

The best performance in the series

What did you like best about The Scottish Prisoner? What did you like least?

DG fills in some gaps

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Scottish Prisoner?

The anticipation (then unfortunately the realisation the narration was painful)

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Jeff Woodman and Rick Holmes ?

Davina Porter

Could you see The Scottish Prisoner being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

Yes as part of the current Outlander series

Any additional comments?

Ask people before you change Narrator. You have really made a mess of this.

If only they had used Davina Porter

The narrator's Scottish and Irish accents were so bad they nearly put me off listening to the story. They were really appalling! A shame as the story was otherwise enjoyable.

A good story but painfully bad accents...

Would you try another book written by Diana Gabaldon or narrated by Jeff Woodman and Rick Holmes ?

I will listen to any book by Diana Gabaldon, even if it is narrated by Jeff Woodman and Rick Holmes. I thought the two narrators were very annoying and frequently found myself shouting at the recording to tell them how to pronounce even quite common words properly. As to their "Scottish" accents - if it wasn't English characters that they were vocalizing, then their default seemed to be Irish. If it hadn't been such a good story, I would have given up on this after the first couple of chapters.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Scottish Prisoner?

The story fills in some blanks and provides more background to the main novels

What didn’t you like about Jeff Woodman and Rick Holmes ’s performance?

Their pronunciation of even quite common words had me shouting at the recording and their alleged "Scottish" accents were awful!

Could you see The Scottish Prisoner being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

It is already happening with the Outlander series

Extraordinary accents!
