England, 1959: Laurel Nicolson is 16 years old, dreaming alone in her childhood tree house during a family celebration at their home, Green Acres Farm. She spies a stranger coming up the long road to the farm and then observes her mother, Dorothy, speaking to him. And then she witnesses a crime.

Unfortunately the narrator seems to have trouble with getting her accents right for the characters, who variously seem to slip into Geordie, welsh and cockney , with a splash of Australian accent thrown in. Apart from this, which somewhat spoiled my listening and made the story a little confusing, this is a great book that I found hard to stop listening to, and I am now going to listen to more of this author's books .

I’m afraid, though, the narration was so inconsistent. The sample gave no indication of this. Changing voice & accent to represent different characters wasn’t very successful I’m sad to say. It did make listening quite frustrating in parts.... if the saga hadn’t been so very intriguing I think I’d have turned off.

Again, as with The Lake House and The Forgotten Garden, the story is let down by what, in this case is the worst narration I've ever heard.
Lee's random attempts at what seem to be various mashups of every regional English accent serve only to confuse and annoy. Londoners are all given a weird mixture of what sounds like Irish, Cornish and geordie, and for some odd reason, Lee continues this weird accent while narrating, not only when voicing the characters. I wish she'd just stick with her own Aussie accent.
I had known this was likely to be the case, as I've heard other KM books narrated by Lee, but I took a chance because the books are so good.
It would have been so much better if narrated by someone, anyone else.

I really enjoy high paced thrillers with lots of twists and turns, - this was not one of those. the story plodded along quietly, though did end with a clever twist, - so I was glad I held out until the end.I have no idea what accent Caroline Lee was aiming for- I couldn't identify it right to the end, and she couldn't keep it going throughout the dialogue. That's the big disadvantage with audible books (which I LOVE) a good story can be ruined by the narration.A gentle story, with bad narration.

It is similar in style to all her other books. I wouldn't compare them to any other writer, because i have yet to find another writer who does this so well. Ms Morton leads us back and forth through time, weaving wonderful family histories and mysteries, revealing tiny nuggets along the way, drawing you in, feeding you misinformation and making you question the family mythologies you were brought up with and believed to be true.What about Caroline Lee’s performance did you like?
