About this listen

England, 1959: Laurel Nicolson is 16 years old, dreaming alone in her childhood tree house during a family celebration at their home, Green Acres Farm. She spies a stranger coming up the long road to the farm and then observes her mother, Dorothy, speaking to him. And then she witnesses a crime.

Fifty years later, Laurel is a successful and well-regarded actress, living in London. She returns to Green Acres for Dorothy’s 90th birthday and finds herself overwhelmed by memories and questions she has not thought about for decades. She decides to find out the truth about the events of that summer day and lay to rest her own feelings of guilt. One photograph, of her mother and a woman Laurel has never met, called Vivian, is her first clue.

The Secret Keeper explores longings and dreams, the lengths some people go to fulfill them, and the strange consequences they sometimes have. It is a story of lovers, friends, dreamers and schemers, play-acting and, deception told against a backdrop of events that changed the world.

This is a very gripping tale of three women and keeps your attention all the way through , with a great ending. It flits from 1941 to the 1950s to 2011 to unfold a gripping story.

Unfortunately the narrator seems to have trouble with getting her accents right for the characters, who variously seem to slip into Geordie, welsh and cockney , with a splash of Australian accent thrown in. Apart from this, which somewhat spoiled my listening and made the story a little confusing, this is a great book that I found hard to stop listening to, and I am now going to listen to more of this author's books .

A cleverly crafted book

A great story beautifully written.
I’m afraid, though, the narration was so inconsistent. The sample gave no indication of this. Changing voice & accent to represent different characters wasn’t very successful I’m sad to say. It did make listening quite frustrating in parts.... if the saga hadn’t been so very intriguing I think I’d have turned off.

Intriguing saga

The story just didn't really grip me, I found myself getting distracted multiple times and not really following. The story itself was okay but I didn't want to finish the book. Sounded like the narrators voice kept changing accents which was off-putting.

didn't hold my attention

This is the third KM book I've listened to, narrated by Caroline Lee. As with the others, the story is beautifully written and each character carefully crafted. Morton has a particular knack with historical drama and I have no doubt that if I were reading the paper version, I'd be immobile in my chair until it was completed.

Again, as with The Lake House and The Forgotten Garden, the story is let down by what, in this case is the worst narration I've ever heard.
Lee's random attempts at what seem to be various mashups of every regional English accent serve only to confuse and annoy. Londoners are all given a weird mixture of what sounds like Irish, Cornish and geordie, and for some odd reason, Lee continues this weird accent while narrating, not only when voicing the characters. I wish she'd just stick with her own Aussie accent.
I had known this was likely to be the case, as I've heard other KM books narrated by Lee, but I took a chance because the books are so good.
It would have been so much better if narrated by someone, anyone else.

Another brilliant Morton, ravaged by bad narratio.

Would you try another book written by Kate Morton or narrated by Caroline Lee?

No

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

a pleasant surprise to have a twist in the end after plodding through hours of mediocracy

Would you be willing to try another one of Caroline Lee’s performances?

No

Could you see The Secret Keeper being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

No

Any additional comments?

I really enjoy high paced thrillers with lots of twists and turns, - this was not one of those. the story plodded along quietly, though did end with a clever twist, - so I was glad I held out until the end.I have no idea what accent Caroline Lee was aiming for- I couldn't identify it right to the end, and she couldn't keep it going throughout the dialogue. That's the big disadvantage with audible books (which I LOVE) a good story can be ruined by the narration.

A gentle story, with bad narration.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Secret Keeper to be better than the print version?

It is when doing the ironing or going to sleep

What other book might you compare The Secret Keeper to, and why?

It is similar in style to all her other books. I wouldn't compare them to any other writer, because i have yet to find another writer who does this so well. Ms Morton leads us back and forth through time, weaving wonderful family histories and mysteries, revealing tiny nuggets along the way, drawing you in, feeding you misinformation and making you question the family mythologies you were brought up with and believed to be true.

What about Caroline Lee’s performance did you like?

She was okay, although her accents were definitely a bit dubious.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It intrigued me.

Another tangled web, beautifully woven
