About this listen

The truth can be dangerous in the wrong hands…

1661, North Berwick, Scotland
One stormy night, healer Honor Seton and her daughter Alice are summoned to save the town lord's wife – but they're too late. A vengeful crusade against the Seton women leads to whispers of witchcraft all over town. Honor hopes her connections can protect them from unproven rumours and dangerous accusations – but is the truth finally catching up with them?

Present day, North Berwick, Scotland
After an explosive scandal lands her husband in prison, Tess Blyth flees Edinburgh to start afresh in Thistle Cottage. As she hides from the media’s unforgiving glare, Tess is intrigued by the shadowy stories of witchcraft surrounding the women who lived in the cottage centuries ago. But she quickly discovers modern-day witch hunts can be just as vicious: someone in town knows her secret – and they won’t let Tess forget it…

A hauntingly compelling timeslip novel from the author of The Girl in the Picture, perfect for fans of The Forgotten Village and The Witchfinder’s Sister.

Good story. Twists and turns.

I enjoyed the present/ past element. Younger voices annoying at times. Thank you for a good listen.

Interesting use of parallel stories

Parallel storiies one in the 1600s and the other in the present day explorng the simlarlites between actual witch-hunting and the words 'witch-hunting' to describe someone being atacked unfairly usually via social media.

I mostly liked this book but had to be attentive to which of the two stories as I was listening to as it isn't always flagged which time period is being described. The similarites between the two kinds of witch-hunting is interesting and thought-provoking though the more life-threatenng in the 1600s.

The feel-good endings are a relief but probably unrealistiic.

The narrator was better with adult voices than young people where she tended to make them them sound annoyingly twee.

Engaging

Strong, believable, relatable characters. I was utterly carried away with the story and keen to find out what had happened. My first Kerry Barrett book but it won’t be my last.

Brilliant!

Absolutely loved this! Narration was tremendous, especially as they were Scottish where the story is set. Story was very well written. The only downside was it felt a tiny bit rushed at the end. Despite this I thoroughly enjoyed it and will look for more books by the same author.
