About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The heart-wrenchingly honest new book about life and death from forensic pathologist and best-selling author of Unnatural Causes, Dr Richard Shepherd.

This book is about death, but in it I will take listeners on a journey through life....

What can death teach us about life?

Conducting many thousands of post-mortems has given Dr Richard Shepherd the opportunity to examine death at every stage of life. Each autopsy is its own unique investigation, providing evidence of how, through life, the risks to us ebb and flow. From old to young, from murder to misadventure and from illness to accidental death, each body has taught him something: about human development, about mortality, about its owner's life story, about justice and even about himself.

From the best-selling author of Unnatural Causes comes a powerful, moving, endlessly fascinating and, above all, reassuring book about death as it touches our own lives - how to understand it, how best to postpone it, and, when our time comes (as it must come), how to embrace it, as the last great adventure on our journey through life.

I read the author's first book and enjoyed it so I was pleased to see he had written another and I could listen to the author read it himself. I found this book to be really interesting throughout, from the stories of various autopsies to the author's own life. I enjoyed the way the book was structured and felt the author explained all of the technical information really well, with some of it being a wake up call to do more about my own health. I would definitely recommend giving this book a listen.

A fascinating study of life and death. I particularly enjoyed all the medical details, with thoughts about the control we each have over our own health.

Absolutely fascinating! I spent my Sunday afternoon listening to this & found it hard to stop. Listened to the last 4 hrs this morning whilst working.

So many interesting cases & facts about the human body. If you enjoyed Dr Shepherd’s previous book then you’ll more than likely enjoy this.

Would recommend his books to anyone with an interest in true crime or medical programs. Gives you a good insight into things & is written in a very caring way to protect the person & family of the deceased.

Hope there will be more from Dr Shepherd!

Some fascinating stories of death but written with a surprisingly positive undertone. I thoroughly enjoyed every chapter and feel I now have a new inspired outlook of death - for someone who suffers from “death anxiety” this has done wonders for my state of mind!

Interesting and beautifully written

Combined with Dr Shepherd's soothing delivery, his memoirs and reflections are cerebral and comforting to listen to.

Some listeners might not like how personal his books are, but I think it's a fascinating insight into the humanity behind the cold procedure of death.

Enjoyable
