About this listen

A Russian arrives in Singapore with a secret to sell. When the Russian is killed and Sam Joseph, the CIA officer dispatched for the meet, goes missing, Artemis Procter is made a scapegoat and run out of the service. Traded back in a spy swap, Sam appears at Procter's central Florida doorstep months later with an explosive secret: there is a Russian mole hidden deep within the upper reaches of CIA.

As Procter and Sam investigate, they arrive at a shortlist of suspects made up of both Procter's closest friends and fiercest enemies. The hunt soon requires Procter to dredge up her own checkered past in service of CIA, placing her and Sam into the sights of a savvy Russian spymaster who will protect Moscow's mole in Langley at all costs, even if it means wreaking bloody havoc across the United States.

Bouncing between the corridors of Langley and the Kremlin, the thrilling new novel by David McCloskey explores the nature of friendship in a faithless business, and what it means to love a place that does not love you back.

The irrepressible Artemis Fowl. There has to be a fourth instalment.

Great contemporary spy story which careers from Moscow to Singapore to Langley to Kissimmee with some unforgettable characters and a densely plotted narrative. Bravo!

The character of Artemis.

Excellent narration and a very well plotted story. Is Irene next on Artemis' list in the following up?

Disappointing from a great writer

Complicated and slightly unbelievable story. Gets bogged down - far too long and much of it feels clumsy and contrived

Great story

Excellent albeit a little frantic at times… not sure if that was the character or narrator

Great story

Another great instalment in this series, I can’t wait for 4th book! Perhaps slower to come together than the first two but second half was fantastic

Not the greatest

Poor narration compared to the other two in the series. This book was not a patch on the other two. Much slower storyline and the ending felt rushed. Disappointed.

Strong characters

Addictive listening! Easy to lose yourself in DM’s world with such curious and compelling characters. I struggled with the narration at times - the Russian accent is comically distracting!

The storyteller

I've left it with five hours to go. It's just so slow, easily to drift away from and ultimately not thrilling.

A gripping premise

For 14 hours of audiobook, actually very little happens in the story. Perhaps that is proof that the spy story is realistic.. anyway my first issue is with the overly peppy American narrator. Like the narrator of the previous novel, she struggles with any non-American accent and actually it was a bit of a grind to get through.
My next gripe is with the story. McCloskey's USP is showing creating realistic spy stories so you get all the office politics and bureaucratic assurance. That's all well and good but to counterbalance this he adds a lot of BORING "character development"; either the main characters drinking or random back stories are inserted. The characters seem to become caricatures, and the author could do with a thesaurus - there is a significant amount of repetition. The ending was also extremely underwhelming - almost a Deus ex machina. Anyway I'll probably read the next one but this has dropped some way from the heights of the first novel, Damascus Station.

Promising story - TERRIBLE narrator

The narrator was so bad that despite a promising story I had to give up and revert to the printed version. Guess it’s good for David as I bought 2 versions but this narrator is awful.
