About this listen

1236. Beautiful Ailenor of Provence, cultured and intelligent, is only 13 when she marries Henry III. Aware of the desperate importance of providing heirs to secure the throne from those who would snatch it away, she is ruthless in her dealings with Henry's barons.

As conflict escalates between them, Ailenor's shrewd and clever Savoyard uncles come to support her, but her growing political power is threatened when Henry's half-siblings also arrive at court. Henry and Ailenor become embroiled in an unpopular war to protect Gascony, the last English territory on the continent, sparking conflict with warrior knight Simon de Montfort, the King's seneschal.

Ailenor, desperate to protect Gascony for her son, strives to treat with France and bring peace to Gascony. Caught in a web of treachery and deceit, 'she-wolf' Ailenor's courage is tested to the limit. Can she find the strength to control her destiny and protect her all that she holds dear?

Narration awful. Couldn’t listen. But audible refused refund even though only listened to first 2 chapters. Sorry.

Totally spoiled

While appreciating the literary skill of the author. For me the story was dragged down by the loud monotone of the reader. Character dialogue is fine but the narration is dire. Cashed it in fairly early on!

Great subject and story!

I really enjoyed this book. My only wish would be for the story to be a bit more complicated and padded out. Some more historical detail would have been nice. Otherwise I thought it was a great book and I enjoyed it.

Good story but…….

The narration was terrible and although I battled through it to nearly the end I couldn’t bear the ridiculous accents and boring monotone

Awful performance

Such an awful, monotone, strident reading. I couldn’t listen. I tried turning the volume down very low but the reader just got in the way of my hearing the story.

Simplistic in style and ruined further by the narrator.

Important historical players reduced to implausible, superficial characters by a writer who merely skimmed historical events. I would judge this to be hardly suitable for adult readers. The audible version was ruined beyond endurance by the reader who sounded as though she was reading to a class of pre-schoolers. Truly awful.

terrible narration

Unlistenable due to the flat, uneducated sound of the narrator trying to deliver a story about the royal court. it is beyond her scope. Googled to find she is apparently in the profession of reading audio books. Dont they audition readers?

An interesting period in our history delivered by an obviously disinterested reader - can’t wait to return this!

As with the reviews of others here, I couldn’t finish this audible; doubtless this is another well researched story by Carol Macgrath but I’ll never know unless I purchase the book. It really is an impossible ‘listen’, such a lifeless, monotone voice with a couple of odd pronunciations along the way. Surely Audible has better readers than this person - this lady must be totally bored by this subject as theres not a spark of interest in her delivery. Frankly, the performance doesn’t even warrant 1 star.

The lack of accuracy, lack of research

I did not like second-guessing events, compared to stories I thought were well-researched historical fiction. The reader seemed unfamiliar with languages she was trying to represent.

I didn’t finish listening to it, because I found myself listening to sections repeatedly, because the previous section seemed wrong in some way.
