About this listen

When creatures that lurk in the dark dare to venture out into the world, lives are changed forever.

Conrad lives a quiet rural life with his parents in the Northlands. During one fated night, his world is turned on its head, as nightmares become reality. While his Northlands blood cries out for revenge, Conrad’s head tells him surviving is the best he can do.

Rescued by a motley band of mercenaries, Conrad embarks on a life he could barely have imagined. As new challenges, friends, and enemies present themselves, Conrad knows that one day he will have to face the evil that so altered his life, and when that day comes, he must be ready.

Another great performance by John Lee

Being a big fan of the Spellmonger series, I've heard John Lee's ability to bring a story alive with brilliant narration but his work on the squire is exceptional. He takes the characters and through his narration he makes them easily recognisable and relatable, moving the story along at great pace. As this is clearly the first in hopefully a full series of books I look forward to hearing more about Conrad and his fellow characters in the book 2, I can't wait.

“It can always go better or worse but how it went is all that matters”

A great book and looking forward to the next in the series. Maybe not as good as the other books by Duncan but it may just be the narrator letting it down slightly.
John seems a great narrator in his own right, but trying to fill the shoes of Simon Vance and Derek Perkins is a hard ask. There’s a similarity that is distracting and he just doesn’t have the same atmosphere unfortunately.

Duncan M. Hamilton is one of favourite fantasy writers & every book I’ve listened to, of his, has been really enjoyable to get into. This book did not disappoint.

a thoroughly enjoyable read

this was a very well narrated and interesting coming of age medevil fantasy , there's elements of magic and otherworldly aspects that slowly creep their way into the story . with a finale that has left me very curious as to where the authors going to go with it . highly reccomend if you're looking for a not too heavy but enjoyable read

very likeable story.

first on a series of three I believe. a great story quite engaging. and moved at a solid pace. the characters were very likeable which I found refreshing. the main protagonist also amiable. it took the perspective from the young lad a good few times and I felt it was very accurate to what I would have thought in same situations. the narrator was excellent lending a European accent to the main characters. I felt it create a nuanced intelligence there. very good. will be going for the second very soon.
