About this listen
The Iris were sent to us from the stars, but their rule is controlling and oppressive. Every season, we send our brothers and sisters to the marriage drafts . . . but the selected never return.
Aella
My world falls apart when my best friend and I are drafted to compete for the hand of Esterra’s most eligible bachelor, the devastatingly handsome Iris prince. As an elemental fae, it should be the greatest honor, but the competition is filled with violence. I question my true purpose as we fight to survive in games rigged against us.
Arianwen
Life should be simple—go on my rite and return to marry a man I’ve never met—but when a handsome stranger falls from the sky, everything is turned upside down. Secrets and lies unravel, leading me to question everything as I find myself pulled into a rebellion. My heart longs for a better world, but am I willing to forsake duty in pursuit of it?
We both face choices:
LOVE or DUTY
LOYALTY or ADVENTURE
FIGHT or SURRENDER
Is fate truly written in the stars, or have they abandoned us?

I ate this book up! It’s Hunger Games meets Divergent meets The Selection, with fae courts, elemental magic, high-stakes trials, and dystopian vibes, packed with secrets, danger, and intrigue.
This leans more towards fantasy than romance, and while I don’t read much fantasy, I found the world-building well-developed yet easy to follow. The descriptive writing made it an immersive experience, allowing me to picture everything like a movie in my mind. The story follows two 25 year-old fae females, Aella and Arianwen, who find themselves on separate, unexpected journeys to self-discovery. The story is told in both their points of view, as well as a few chapters from Aella’s love interest Prince Kal. I’m not going to say much about the plot because it was so much fun going in blind (It’s been on my TBR for over a year so I’d forgotten what it was supposed to be about).
I thought the pacing was great. The story starts off a bit slower, easing us into the world and introducing us to all the different characters, then gradually builds momentum until it explodes with action in the final third. I also loved how the two separate storylines were interwoven in a way that kept me fully engaged.
This story features a fade to black, slow-burn romance as a secondary focus of the story. The tension was delicious, with one pairing following an enemies-to-lovers arc and the other developing from strangers to friends to lovers, keeping things interesting.
There are lots of great side characters, multiple villains I’d love to see get their comeuppance and kind-hearted friends I’d like to see more of in the next book.
The narration of this audiobook was phenomenal. Nicole Fikes masterfully captured the essence of so many characters, giving each a unique voice that fit their personality and portraying their emotions with incredible skill. There were a few moments when one or two male characters sounded a bit feminine, and Prince Kal’s RP English accent occasionally slipped into a different dialect, but overall, it was a fantastic performance.
Great narration, engaging story, the plot twist!
