About this listen
Can we fix how we look after children in care?
The audio edition includes an exclusive bonus track with author Chris Wild and actor Neil Morrissey (Men Behaving Badly, Line of Duty, Unforgotten, The Night Manager).
Government cuts, unregulated care homes, inadequate staff training—campaigner and care home consultant Chris Wild has seen it all. The low standards and frequent abuse of children in care has long been a focal point of his loud message: we are failing our young people, and something needs to change.
Chris delves deep into the lives of care home kids, from experiences with county lines, drugs, trafficking, knife crime, gang violence to child exploitation and sexual abuse. He tells the stories of the voiceless, the children who have been left behind, compounded by his own experiences of growing up in care.
How is the care system failing our young people and controlling just who and what they can become? What help do we really give children after their time in care is over, left to fend for themselves? Is it too late to fix the state of it?
Urgent and critical, the state of it will be the most important book you listen to this year.
In support of Become, the charity for children in care and young care leavers, a charity registered in England and Wales, charity number 1010518.

Heartbreaking
This book was as hard to listen to as I image it was to write.
I work in a SEMH Independent school for 12-18 year olds in the care system.
We look after them as much as e can while they are with us. The problems come when they move on.
I wish this book was not true, but ever word Chris wrote is!!
It made me cry so many times.

Amazingly relatable story
It is often hard to find someone like the author wanting to make a difference to others. The book is an amazing insight into the world most will never know exists, and for telling all I thank the author.
Bonus is the narrator and his many voices. I enjoyed every part of it.

Absolute must read for anyone who cares at all about our society and it’s future
Chris has given a great balance of personal stories married with his experience as a caregiver working within a broken institution. It is an amazing and unique prospective which is deeply moving and challenging. The book has made me aware of a part of society I have never encountered nor was aware had been so terribly let down, but not just let down or neglected but abused and damaged, in many cases irreparably. It was great to hear the author talking about his life and his ongoing work challenging a broken care system at the end of the book whilst interviewing Neil Morrisey. I just hope and pray that the rebuilding of the care system and just the reform of a broken system can take place quickly and I hope Chris and people with his knowledge and experience can drive change forward.
