Summary

"A proper twisty thriller."—Sarah Pinborough

A stranger has infiltrated your family…and now he’s taking over.

Paul’s just here to help, or so he claims—sent by a charity for vulnerable people to do odd jobs for elderly widow Gwen. But for Gwen’s daughter Connie, there’s just something about Paul that rings alarm bells from day one. He’s a little too kind, a little too involved…Worse still, Gwen seems to have fallen under his spell.

The last thing Connie wants is a stranger meddling in the safe routine she’s built around Gwen. She loves being the one Gwen turns to for cooking, cleaning and company. But the more Paul visits, the more Gwen is relying on him. By the time he conveniently finds himself between homes and has no choice but to move in, Connie is certain he’s trying to push her out completely.

It’s her word against his, though, and as her attempts to unmask him become ever more desperate she’s not the only one left wondering if she’s lost her grip on reality. But when events start spiralling rapidly out of her control, should Connie wage all-out war on Paul and risk losing Gwen forever—or has that been his plan all along?

Critic reviews

“Though not yet a household name, Marrs is an incredibly talented storyteller with a built-in audience who knows what he can do. When unfamiliar readers get their hands on this one, they’ll want more.”Booklist

“I inhaled this book. A novel of second guesses, of mistrustful characters and downright terrifying ones. An absolute ride of a thriller. I loved it.”—L. V. Matthews, author of The Twins and The Silent Waters

Twist and turns between Connie and Meredith

I loved this book, it’s the first time I have listened to one of John marrs books but I throughly enjoyed it.

Plot twists were great!

The voices were really irritating! Took away from a good story. Not my favourite from Marrs but an interesting story.

Story line

There was nothing I didn't like. I am just typing this because there is a fifteen word minimum which is ridiculous.

Shocking narration

Brilliant story but the most irritating narration by all the artists. The upper class accent of the main character jarred with her background and personality. As for the other characters, the narration was so robotic that at times it felt as though I was being read to by Alexa. Such a shame as the book was really good, with lots of twists and turns.

A very dark twisty story with elements of comedy in it

The twists and turns, it made me laugh out loud and also shout in disbelief, (not great when listening on a bus through headphones)
Very much enjoyed this book, it had me at the first chapter

A masterful novel that shapeshifts genre

What a ride that was. While I would say that the novel dwindled a little in the third act, it's very close to perfect. What starts as a seemingly straightforward thriller soon shapeshifts into a suspenseful mystery, then a tense game of cat and mouse, and a final twist of the knife. With an eminently likeable (yet suitably flawed) protagonist, a vile and frustrating villain, and a colourful cast of supporting characters. This novel did the difficult task of really making me feel things; as if I were a character in the story and not a spectator. While it didn't quite stick the landing, it came as close to perfect as you can without quite being perfect.

The primary narrator was almost perfect (a little too posh for the character, I thought). But I did have a problem with one of the other narrators, who seemed to overdo her parts and sound weirdly foppish and like she was trying too hard.

Great storyline! Amazing twists!

I thought this was a great book. I listened to the audiobook while cleaning and got so lost in it’s story, i was surprised i had finished my work without thought. I really enjoyed the whole storyline and the twists and genuine gasps and out loud exclamations of “oh no” and “awww” from me made it a real page turner. Off to find another by John Marrs now 😃

Decent but not the authors best

The story was good, but not as unique or memorable as other novels of theirs. A solid story but not a standout.

The main narration was very good, but the secondary women’s narration was dreadful - if those sections were longer I would not have been able to continue reading.
