About this listen

SMALL FORTUNES. BIG FEELINGS.

'Joyful, heartwarming and utterly charming' AMÉLIE WEN ZHAO
'The warmest, loveliest book' SANGU MANDANNA
'Will soothe your heart' SARAH BETH DURST

A cozy fantasy about trying to find yourself - and finding a family instead. Perfect for fans of Legends and Lattes, A Psalm for the Wild-Built and The House in the Cerulean Sea.

Fleeing a troubled past, immigrant fortune teller Tao roams the dusty countryside with only her mule for company, telling small fortunes, for small prices. Big fortunes come with big consequences . . . which she knows from bitter experience.

It's a lonely life, until she encounters an ex-mercenary and a (semi) reformed thief, who recruit her into their desperate search for a lost child. Soon, they're joined by a baker with a knead for adventure, and - of course - a slightly magical cat.

Tao sets down a new path with companions as big-hearted as her fortunes are small. But as her friends break down her walls, the shadows of her past close in. Now, Tao must decide whether to risk everything to save the family she never thought she could have . . .

I did enjoy it but I think that cosy fantasy stories are not for me. I need a bit more grit

A cosy adventure

It's nice, and cozy, which goes a long way these days, but I think it lacks a certain je ne sais quoi which you find in, say, Sangu Mandanna's book that makes it a bit more memorable.

Not to say this was a bad adventure, because it was sweet and the found family element was lovely, but as another reviewer remarked elsewhere, it backs down from every conflict that it dangles in front of the characters. And that ultimately comes across as a bit of a let down. Not in so far as the book is less pleasant, but it's less memorable.

Cozy

I’m glad I picked this up, I enjoyed the book but found the audio a little flat! I know it’s cosy fantasy but I just didn’t love the way it was read!

It’s a sweet read

A heartwarming tale, told softly but it evokes many existential questions, such as the point to life, what it means to be happy, to be rich, and for belonging (especially as an immigrant). One of those 'and the moral of the story was...' type of tales. Beautiful analogies, well written and very well narrated.

Heartwarming
