Fascinating

While seemingly comprehensive, dates, places and names start to homogenise to the point not caring. So around the third chapter I started again. I’m now about half way through and though I’m finding it more interesting, it doesn’t feel like a book about the templars. More of history of the crusades with the templars thrown in. I’ll persevere, but given it’s a chore to stay with it, a refund will be sought.

By the way, I’m no historian by any stretch, but I don’t think Herod had all babies killed as the author states, only the male ones? So it does breed some doubt over what else is inaccurate.

This is an intriguing book about the Templars of the holy cross - one of Christianitys military organisations established during the times of the principal crusades against the Muslims in the Levant. Dan Jones, who also narrates this book, has done an astounding historic research and personally I love thia type of historical stories rather than summaries. It really brings the history to life! The only downside, as is common with non fiction audio books, is that it's sometimes hard to follow all the characters and places and artifacts when listening, rather than reading.
Tho I heartedly recommend this book to anyone interested in this point in time of the history.

This is a very well researched narrative history of the Order of the Poor Knights of the Temple Solomon (situated on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem). Founded in France in the early 12th century, these men were trained in martial arts whilst living the austere life of a strictly discipline (ordained) Christian monk (there was even at least one Order of Templar nuns). Their functuon was to secure control of the Holy Land, protect the Holy Land from non-Christian incursion, and offer a secure and safe pilgrimage route from Western Europe to Palestine. This they did in conjunction with the Hospitalier Knights of St John who offered medical care and comfort. Although the Knights Templar fought bravely in many Crusades (even being respected by their Islamic enemies), the Order was betrayed in 1307 by the greed of the French King Philip IV, and the corrupt Pope Clement V. King Philip wanted control of Templar land and wealth and fabricated all kinds of lies to achieve this. The last Grand Master of the Templar - Jacques de Moley - was burned at the stake in Paris in 1314 after cursing the King and Pope. Both would be dead within the year.
