"What?" you ask- "better than Tim Piggott-Smith reading 'The Human Factor?" Hard to believe, but yes. "Better than Don Cheadle's performance in 'Lincoln In The Bardo'?" Even better than that. Jim Norton reads the funniest book ever written to make it somehow even funnier, even stranger and even more absurd. What a perfect combination- nobody will ever beat this version. Just buy it. Ignore all other reviews, they are wrong. Unless they agree with this one, in which case they are scientifically correct. Jim Norton should read all of Flann O'Brien's books now. Is there a Jim Norton voice available for a digital assistant? I want one. Do it now! Take my money!

The greatest audiobook performance I've ever heard

A few parts of the book i found funny, entertaining, but much of it just tedious to get through, especially the 'footnotes' on DeBandier etc..
If id been reading the hardcopy i could have skipped this, but i listened on Audible thinking why am i even listening to this guff.

I've admired and read TTP intermittently and continuously many times over the years but it has taken Mr Norton's utterly inspired reading to bring O'Brien's absurd jewel fully into the light. A joy.

Firstly I am astounded that the manuscript was rejected and such was the feeling if rejection, that the author deemed it 'lost' by and it was published posthumously. Secondly the humour is on an incredible level, subtle but evident in the thoughts and actions of the characters and their surroundings. To say to much will incur spoilers. This is very much a book where in the world of the damned and dead - rules and laws (not even the law of gravity) hold good. All that there is scope for is back-chat and funny cracks (adapted from a quote by the author).

This is a favourite book of mine, first enjoyed about sixty years ago when I was a student. Now it is given a gorgeous reading from one of the greatest actors around; Jim Norton. He lets the wonderful story speak for itself, and he submits to the author's creative brilliance without turning into caricature. A perfect combination of author and performer.
