About this listen

Bloomsbury presents The Troubled Deep by Rob Parker, read by Luke R. Francis.

A gripping, propulsive and atmospheric crime thriller perfect for fans of Ann Cleeves, Peter James and Elly Griffiths. Your new Norfolk crime obsession starts here...

Nobody ever knew what happened to the Brindleys. One summer they were there - flashy, loud and beautiful - and then they were gone. A mother, father and two children, vanished into the East Anglian night.

Some said the family never made it home from the party; their speeding car thrown off the tracks and the four of them silently buried in the marshes. Others said they had simply moved on. For thirty years, the case remained as cold as the freezing waterways of the Norfolk broads.

Until Cam Killick found the car.

An ex-marine and ex-SBS officer, Cam Killick’s PTSD has made the return to civilian life a living nightmare. The only place he can find peace is underwater, where the world is muffled to white noise. As a cold case diver it is his job to scour the waterways of the country for the lost, the submerged, the drowned, laying their stories to rest alongside them.

Except when Cam throws open the doors to the Brindley car, all four bodies are missing. And Cam will soon learn that some secrets, once submerged, are better off staying that way.

Critic reviews

'What a romp! I raced through this murky tale of murder, aching mystery and long-buried truth like a hot knife through butter! Rob Parker is a master of the stone cold twist' (Janice Hallett, author of Sunday Times bestseller The Appeal)

'A story that propels you through the pages at a rate of knots and one that is the very definition of a one-sitting read' (Robert Rutherford, Sunday TImes bestselling author of Seven Days)

'I finished this belter in a weekend. You'll need to tread carefully with this one, as once you plunge into The Troubled Deep you'll be so immersed that you might forget to come up for air' (Trevor Wood, author of The Man on the Street)

'I loved Cam. Flawed and broken, but undoubtably human, he’s brave, and loyal to a fault. A brilliant start to an exciting new series' (Sam Holland, author of the Major Crimes series)

'Paints the Norfolk setting with beautiful brushstrokes, and in Cam Killick we meet a flawed hero who promises to captivate readers for years to come' (Chris McDonald)

This will appeal to those who like the detective thrillers of David Blake.. whilst it is a solemn affair, without the same little humorous elements, its detail on the Broads is more accurate (no reference to tow paths..) and it’s a good plot. My only gripe on the audiio book is giving the main man a rather grating Yorkshire accent, like Sean Bean.. no lilting Norfolk accents to be heard.

Enjoyable thriller on Norfolk Broads

Narrator’s voice was a bit irritating when performing as the children. Story ok but not sure I’d listen to another.

Ok not great

Original main character. Different plot

Interesting main character and plot, well written by Rob Parker and good narration by Luke R Francis. I hope there’s a second novel in the works, I shan’t hesitate to buy it.

Very enjoyable
