About this listen

Daniel Clay, a once-respected psychiatrist, has been missing for years following revelations about harm done to the children in his care. Believing him dead, his daughter Rebecca has tried to come to terms with her father's legacy, but her fragile peace is about to be shattered. Someone is asking questions about Daniel Clay, someone who does not believe that he is dead: the revenger Merrick, a father and a killer obsessed with discovering the truth about his own daughter's disappearance. Private detective Charlie Parker is hired to make Merrick go away, but Merrick will not be stopped. Soon Parker finds himself trapped between those who want the truth about Daniel Clay to be revealed, and those who want it to remain hidden at all costs.

But there are other forces at work here. Someone is funding Merrick's hunt, a ghost from Parker's past. And Merrick's actions have drawn others from the shadows, half-glimpsed figures intent upon their own form of revenge, pale wraiths drifting through the ranks of the unquiet dead. The Hollow Men have come….

Yet another masterpiece by Connolly, I just cannot have enough of the dark and twisted intricate plots and which ywt remain realistically humane. I love the complexity of his characters and the time he allocates in dipicting each and every one of them so picturesquely poetic. Well done!

Fantastic storyline, impecable performance

A stunning rendition by Jeff Harding of a darkly constructed mystery by John Connolly. Brings a new and emotive interpretation to a narrative master of the Crime genre.

Stunning rendition by Jeff Harding.

Incredibly well written and performed yet again, the detail of the places and characters keep you invested in this series of books and chomping at the bit to start the next.

Another brilliant addition

Connolly is a master story teller, Parker is a work or character genius, Jeff Harding is the best story teller I've ever heard.

I have loved John Connolly and his Charlie Parker series for many years having discovered him back in my college days. I'm catching up again on audiobook! He writes so beautifully that I find listening to them is even better than reading them!
The narration is very good, but I have to admit ( even though it isn't the popular opinion) that I prefer Paul Birchard's narration ( he only did one -The White Road) to Jeff Harding's. Mr. Birchard's interpretation of the characters ( and accents) of Parker, Louis and Angel - especially Angel! feel more authentic to me, and more as I imagined them to be. I can maybe forgive his pronunciation of Louis! Mr. Harding is perfectly adequate, but to my ear, maybe a little too Philip Marlowe.

Always will be my favourite author.

Another great installment in this series from John Connelly, and again, a great performance. Jeff Harding IS the voice of Charlie Parker.

Superb - just as expected.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book to a friend if they enjoyed supernatural thrillers with a twist

Have you listened to any of Jeff Harding’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I love Jeff Harding he brings the characters to life. I first came across him when I listened to "Dancing for the Hangman"

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, it made me really sad, its uncomfortable listening because you really don't want to believe the evil that people do but you know it goes on. Even though the book is fictional you get drawn in and hooked. It could have been based on real events and in parts, probably was.

Any additional comments?

The research into child abuse the author did for this book must have been harrowing. I wasn't sure I was going to like the book but I just couldn't put it down. I wanted to see justice done! The twist at the end was one I didn't see coming either.

Haunting uncomfortable compelling

John Connolly nails it every time with his Charlie Parker series.
The characters and attention to detail are beautifully done without labouring the point. The humour is on point and the pace is perfect.
Hands down the my favourite Fictional character! Thank you John Connolly for creating this journey and a big thank you to Jeff Harding who is amazing in bringing the Audio books to life.

League of his own.
