A stunning new novel of power, desire and the secrets all families carry, from the acclaimed author of Nightingale, Marina Kemp.

When fledgling writer Zoe arrives at the Sicilian holiday home of famed novelist Don Travers, she feels that she has made it. And yet as the week unfolds it is not Don but his children and unknowable wife, Lydia, who come to intrigue Zoe most. On the fringes, Don’s youngest, Nemony, watches as her older siblings begin to navigate the treacherous waters of the adult world. When her adored oldest sister makes a terrible mistake, the holiday ends suddenly, shattering the fragile balance of their parents’ marriage and the siblings’ lives.

Many years later and in the wake of loss, the events of that summer continue to haunt. Nemony, now a lonely new mother herself, strikes up a chance friendship with Zoe. With her support, Nemony attempts to grapple with the casual damage enacted by her father. But as their relationship deepens, she is soon forced to question the true extent of Zoe’s fascination with the Travers family.

Tracing their lives through Sicily, London and the old mining towns of Appalachia, Nemony must uncover the stories untold – about her implacable father, her troubled mother, and the siblings she might still do anything for.

How our childhood family relationships affect siblings differently and how perceptions can vary and carry on into adulthood. Simply and beautifully written with great narration

Engaging and beautifully written

Narrator was perfect and managed to convey different characters clearly with very subtle inflection! I really liked the narrative structure and differing narrative voices recalling the same events very differently.

These characters are like ghosts, I find myself thinking about them all the time after finishing this book. Such beautiful writing, I can’t wait for more!

An absolute must read. Incredibly poignant, perceptive; a beautiful reflection of family. Loved it from start to finish

Intricately beautiful

Kemp is up there with Elizabeth Strout; how she handles a story of such complexity and raw honesty about the fundamentals of being a human has utterly blown me away. The Unwilding is deeply profound but also irreverent at times, filled with wonderful and surprising relationships, dialogue and observations. I was utterly absorbed. Moved. Changed. Everything you want from a great story.

I will be buying the physical copy to absorb it in a different way because there are so many layers to this story/writing it could take many re-reads and you would discover new things each time. A uniquely spectacular piece of work. Wow wow wow.

Exquisite, painful, beautiful

One of the best stories I've read in a long time. Strong character development that leaves you feeling that you know them as real people. Held me captivated, which most fiction fails to do. I would readily read another novel by the author.

Great story and Characters

Badly written- clunky wording. Where is the story? Weird characters. I can't see what the fuss is about.

Gave up after a while.
