About this listen
The Woman in White, considered one of the first mystery novels and is the best known work of English novelist Wilkie Collins.
Late one night, a drawing teacher meets a mysterious woman dressed in white. Who is she, and what is her connection to the teacher's new pupil, a beautiful heiress?
Serialized in 1859 - 1860, and first published in book form in 1860 it is still regarded still as one of the best plots in English literature. Told from multiple perspectives, the story is brought to life by its marvellous villains and complex, spirited and believable female characters.
William Wilkie Collins (1824 - 1889) was an English novelist, playwright, and author of short stories.

Gripping Classic Novel

For someone brought up on pulp thrillers, this novel was a pleasant surprise. Although 'old-fashioned', the story would be relevant in any decade or century - lovers unable to be together due to a promised marriage proposal, and devious murky partnerships made for a great listen.

Even though the story takes place either in the 19th century and in another society, it exposes universal values of good and evil very clearly.
Wilkie Collins: one of the greatest storytellers ever.

His characters are deliciously overblown and the plot wonderfully convoluted.
Gabriel Woolf understands the characters and gives each one a distinctive voice and their own personality.
This would be a must if it were full-price: at ?5 everyone should rush to download it immediately.
A stunning listen

This book is excellently narrated by Gabriel Wolfe whose voice is perfectly suited to a victorian novel and lends it some gravitas.
At ?5.00 a pop what have you got to lose? This book should be on everyone's reading list.

It is a lovely story, and one that will grip you to the end. Some friends were listening to it while driving to Switzerland for a summer holiday; they were near the end when they arrived, but it was so engaging that they couldn't unpack but had to wait in the car to find out what happened.
The Wikipedia entry states:
In 2003, Robert McCrum writing for The Observer listed The Woman in White number 23 in "the top 100 greatest novels of all time", and the novel was listed at number 77 on the BBC's survey The Big Read.
As you can see, I rate it higher.
Gabriel Woolf's narration is outstanding, even if there are some slips and the production could have been tidied up. If you are put off by it, you aren't taking in the story. He also narrates 'Treasure Island', and I highly recommend that too.
Best romantic thriller and currently my top novel
