This is another very amusing narrative from the pen of Peter Nuttall, Until reading this I must admit I did not realise how daft some song lyrics actually are, They may call it poetic licence but the liberties taken by song writers to get rhyming lyrics is sometimes hilarious when viewed through Peter Nuttall's eyes. Peter McGiffen's sarcasm and scornful narration all adds up to make this a very funny, lighthearted listen. Highly recommended for those dark days when you need a good laugh.

Not really what I had expected, this book is simply a run through of lyrics, decade by decade from the 1950s to 2020 selecting lines from pop songs which the author finds ridiculous, mere sound fillers or thoroughly offensive. Like 'Twisting the night away' is just not possible, he says, with gentle contempt. Or that 'You set my head on fire' (Annie Lenox) could be considered desirable, whilst 'i was 37, you were 17, half my age' is simply poor maths. The book is mildly amusing but really loses it's impact when this is all that is happening for four hours.
However, the tone changes in the final chapters which spotlight the (mostly) more recent lyrics glorifying and glamourising violence against women, in which they are both objectified and treated as second class citizens to be freely used for non consensual sex. Here the author fully shows his disgust at lyrics promoting such out of date attitudes being considered both humorous and acceptable.
Sadly, the book is not helped by the rather jerky narration of Peter McGiffin although he does bring some of the sarcasm invested in the text to his audience.

Another nugget of comedy gold from Peter Nuttall, who mines the endless seam of dreadful pop lyrics. Told with customary wry humour, Nuttall pokes fun at some cringeworthy lines from songs from the 50s to the present day.

Narrator Peter McGiffen brings the appropriate level of scorn and sarcasm to the reading, to keep the humour playful, for the most part.
