Summary

Monsters come in all shapes and sizes, and not all of them have sharp teeth and beady red eyes.

New London. A thriving metropolis at the forefront of technological advancement and a shining gem of civilization.

Faeries. Whether they come off cute and cuddly or downright predatory, they all bring misfortune or are heralds of it.

Experience is a harsh taskmistress, but her lessons sink the deepest. Having been taught the lesson at a great cost, Kal’s rules for dealing with faeries are simple: Don’t talk to them, don’t look at them, don’t give them the time of the day.

So, when the Other Side comes knocking one fateful, stormy day, Kal, at first, pretends not to notice. Was forgetting this rule his folly?

His way of life is in great danger. His little sister, Sammie, a natural mage, is taken by Ouroboros, a criminal organization made up of raving lunatics that profit off the misery and suffering of others, and have everything to do with all the crimes of magic in New London.

Kal will go to any lengths to save his sister, even to his death. Accompanied by his sylph companion, a mischievous pest, Kal dives deep into the dark underbelly of the city. But, are his hands enough to dig his sister out from the muck?

Loved it!

If you love faeries, magic and mayhem, you're going to love this book! It's full of all sorts of Fair Folk and you will not be disappointed. Fantastic world building and a well rounded cast of characters are brought to life and worth every minute spent reading! Highly recommended!
The narrator did a fantastic job of bringing each character to life. I don't know how he can do so many different inflections! Brilliantly done!
I received this book as a gift and am leaving my honest review.

Fabulously entertaining

Set in alternate London, this book is engaging and has lots of action. Fairies are not as you expect. The narrator is excellent at different voices. Well worth a listen

Fab dark fantasy

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Kal goes in search of his little Sister Sammie who is a Mage and has been kidnapped by a criminal organisation called Ouroboros. He has the help of a fairy called Belle who isn’t the sweet fairy we all presume.
Greg Patmore is brilliant at narrating all the characters .

Fast paced, fairly easy listening story

I enjoyed this book, although it didn't blow my mind. Some of the story felt almost like filler, but in general it was a good story and the characters were ok, if a little stereotyped. The narration was pretty good, especially Belle!

Magical

Firstly, I was so impressed by Greg’s narration , love all the different accents he really brought this story to life.
The story was good and I was interested until the end. Shame about the odd swear word which was unnecessary in a children’s book.

Good as part of the series

Story Rating: 2 stars as a stand-alone or 4 stars if you plan to continue the series.
Narration: 5 stars

I originally reviewed this as what I believed was a stand-alone ebook and found it to be disappointing. Now, listening to it as an audiobook (and having read Book 2 in the series), I still find some parts confusing, but overall I am upgrading the story score based on the whole of books 1 & 2. I would not recommend it as a stand-alone read or listen, but it works well if you plan to read or listen to the whole set.

As a stand-alone, there wasn't enough explanation to keep me involved in the story or to help me understand what was going on. From the first time shift, everything seemed disjointed and not adequately explained. Seeming friends became enemies with no explanations. There were so many questions and plot threads unraveling by the end of the story, and the big climax just fell flat. As a stand-alone, I would say pass. It might be a good start, but there are just too many holes and too little explanation. I wouldn't recommend it unless you plan to continue with the rest of the series.

The narration of the audiobook really brings the characters and scenes alive, and the voices and accents are incredible. A++

Entertaining

There’s No Such Thing As Monsters is a teen/ YA fantasy book involving a young man who tries to protect his younger sister. The story has plenty of action and creatures. The characters are interesting and entertaining. The plot has twists. There were a few areas in the story that I wanted to goose the hero so that he’d make a decision. The narrator did a great job! I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
