FINALIST FOR THE LOS ANGELES TIMES BOOK PRIZE
“Every sentence delivered. The pathos of truth-seeking left me thinking of Herman Melville." —Timothy Snyder, #1 New York Times bestselling author of On Tyranny
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING author Sarah Kendzior delves into the difference between conspiracy and conspiracy theory, "deftly separat[ing] fact from fiction in a conspiracy-addled nation" (VANITY FAIR).
"The topics covered in this audiobook may be rough going for listeners, but the author's commitment to sounding the alarm will keep them glued to their earbuds." —AudioFile
Conspiracy theories are on the rise because officials refuse to enforce accountability for real conspiracies. Uncritical faith in broken institutions is as dangerous as false narratives peddled by propagandists.
The truth may hurt—but the lies will kill us.
They Knew discusses conspiracy culture in a rapidly declining United States struggling with corruption, climate change, and other crises. As the actions of the powerful remain shrouded in mystery—“From Norman Baker to Jeffrey Epstein, Iran-Contra to January 6" (VF)—it is unsurprising that people turn to conspiracy theories to fill the informational void. They Knew exposes the tactics these powerful actors use to placate an inquisitive public.
Here, for the first time, Kendzior blends her signature whip-smart prose and eviscerating arguments with lyrical and intimate examinations of the times and places that haunt American history. "America is a ghost story," states Kendzior, as she unearths decades of buried history, providing an essential and critical look at how to rebuild our democracy by confronting the political lies and crimes that have shaped us.

Brilliant. A must read or listen to on Audible.
Sarah is an unique American. She is as honest as you can get. And this is reflected in her books. They Knew is an excellent exposé of all the hypocrisy of all layers of US society. One expects at least 10% in every country to be criminal/corrupt etc. In the US its a least 50%. Ref The Midterms. The book is of historical value & future generations may or should appreciate it. Buy it before its banned after 2024. Thank you Sarah.

The sharpest analysis you're going to f
Sarah Kendzior is the sharpest and bravest writer of what is happening in America that I read - and I have read many. Her analysis is much more deep and profound than I have ever come across, and in addition to that she is a wonderful poetic writer. A true gem.

Interesting but read in a monotonous drawl
This could have been so much more engaging if someone with a bit more panache in their voice had read it. The narrator is so utterly monotonous it made it absolutely torturous listening to this! I'm buying the paperback and reading it instead.

Brilliant, as always.
Another great and chilling book by Sarah Kendzior. Her narration , done with real emotional depth adds to a great piece of dystopian investigative journalism.

Important book
Courageous, principled, passionate, informative and deeply humane. An important and thoughtful analysis. We need an army of Sarah Kendziors.

Fascinating and very accessible for non-US readers
An excellent and important account, read with confidence and authority. I was a little nervous before buying it that there would be too much that I, as a reader from outside the US, would be unfamiliar with, but Sarah Kendzior tells her story well and persuasively, providing the context and background needed to underline her points. I would strongly recommend this.

Awful nonsense
If I could give this poorly written piece of writing less than 1 star I would. Probably the worst book I’ve had the displeasure to read in a very long time. I have spent more time constructing this review than the author did researching and developing her arguments. It’s very difficult to overstate exactly how poor this book is.

Short on research
This book did not match the description. I was expecting a detailed analysis of conspiracy and its impact on American decision making. But it was lacking in facts, figures and analysis and instead read like a very one sided, very long blog post. There is a need for stronger editing and a clearer narrative through the content.
One reviewers comment said it was accessible to non-US readers. The discussion only relates to the US experience and there are many references and allusions to US people and events that might not be clear to non-US readers or people who have not been following the US in recent decades.

An anti-Trumo tirade for most of the book
Recommended to me by a friend who likes the author's podcast and previous books. I found the narration beyond dull - this book holds the record for me of a complete listen at 1.7x speed.
Most chapters descend into anti-Trump screeds with very little political insight. Every second line was the author reminding me she's a mother in her 40s and that some conspiracy theories are fine while the more extreme ones such as the QAnon buffoonery are not.
I just found this book to be an unremarkable exercise in naval gazing.
