About this listen

'MacBride is a masterful storyteller with a terrific eye for detail and razor-sharp wit. This House of Burning Bones is an absolute must-read.' – Karin Slaughter, author of This Is Why We Lied

The Granite City is ready to burn, and all it takes is a single spark . . .

In the heat of a blistering summer, Aberdeen’s police are struggling: half the force is off sick, leave has been cancelled, someone’s firebombed a hotel full of migrants, and there’s a massive protest march happening this Saturday.

With officers dropping like flies, Detective Inspector Logan McRae is forced to juggle cases and run a major murder investigation with a skeleton staff of misfits, idiots and malingerers until the top brass can arrange back-up from other divisions.

It doesn’t help that the Aberdeen Examiner has just been bought by Natasha Agapova, a tabloid media tycoon hell-bent on blaming local police for everything. And she’s more than happy to fan the flames.

But, as bad as everything seems, it’s all about to get much, much worse . . .

Critic reviews

Dark and brilliantly written (Linwood Barclay, author of I Will Ruin You )
MacBride is a damned fine writer (Peter James, author of Picture You Dead )
Crime fiction of the highest order (Mark Billingham, author of The Last Dance )
Stuart MacBride is an automatic must-read for me . . . always fast, hard, authentic – and different (Lee Child, author of Killing Floor )
Deft plotting and whipcrack dialogue, a must read (Peter Robinson, author of Gallows View )
Brilliantly creepy (Jane Casey, author of A Stranger in the Family )
Ferocious and funny, this is Tartan Noir at its best (Val McDermid, author of Past Lying )
Stuart MacBride is one of the best in the business. Always beautifully written, evocative settings and characters dripping with authenticity and a story you can’t get out of your head. Stuart delivers every single time (Steve Cavanagh, author of Witness 8 )
Hard-hitting prose with a bone-dry humour and characters you can genuinely believe in, Stuart MacBride’s Logan McRae series of novels are a real treat (Simon Kernick, author of You All Die Tonight )
This House Of Burning Bones sees the most welcome return of the Aberdeen-set Logan McRae series and it’s as good as we had any right to expect. It’s witty, it’s gripping and it further cements MacBride’s place amongst the upper echelons of the UK’s crime fiction writers. A masterpiece! (MW Craven, author of Nobody's Hero)

Listened in two sittings. Not at all disappointing as some sequels can be. Hope these characters will be returning....

Like meeting old friends.

Storyline, sat up and listened till I had finished. Love the author and the narrator. Engaging, humorous, and a bit gory. Can’t wait till the next book!

Fantastic

The book’s interwoven plots are its strength and its weakness. Often the narrative is hard to follow. The characters are really well done except for the village idiot but surprisingly astute young sidekick but his dialogue goes beyond quirky and a long way into « shut up » well before any other character tells him to do so! Overall good story well written irritating jn parts - and please no more singing

Good stories well interwoven

I think Stuart MacBride is a literary genius. his character development continues with Tuftys made up language , Steeles courful sweary metaphors and insights, and McCreas upstanding kind righteous if sometimes world weary attitude. I love this series and look forward to the next book.

love the non swearing and colourful metaphors, and Tuftys made up language. dark but comedic as well.

Nice to have Logan back, it's been so long! Great story and narration as always.
My only gripe, is the amount of time Logan spends calling his colleagues idiots! Too many for my liking. otherwise, a well written tale that goes smoothly and quickly.

Great

I really enjoyed this book and limited my listening time so I could enjoy it for longer. I wondered if the broad Doric would be understood by non Scot’s. However my English friends had no problems with it. I’d love to see this series in a television series. Wonderfully read and every character was perfect. Already waiting for the next book.

I've waited a long time for this book - 6 years to be exact! I must admit I was slightly apprehensive about revisiting old favourites after so long but I needn't have worried. This was like slipping back into your favourite slippers after a hard day at work - bliss!

I re-listened to the series before diving into this one to get my head back into the Loganverse and this followed on as if I'd never been away.

Perfect narration by Steve Worsley (as always), I loved the story but most of all I loved the banter - like getting back together with old friends after years apart.

I really, really hope this is the beginning of a new chapter for Logan & Co and that Stuart will give us many more - pretty please Stuart!

Welcome back Logan!!!
