About this listen

Gilly Ramsey's lonely childhood was brightened only by visits to her godmother until her death, when the grown-up Gilly inherits the family cottage, “Thornyhold.” Set deep in a wild wood, with its magical and peaceful strength and its sovereign defenses against evil, Thornyhold is like something out of a fairy tale. The old house strikes an end to Gilly's bleak future, offering more than just a new home. It presents a chance to start over—despite its reputation for magic, history of witchcraft, and a resident black cat. This Gothic romance features sparkling prose, delightful characters, and classic intrigue.

5* for Jenny Agutter's narration. The country accents are good, her children's voices are lovely - unlike some I've heard where the narrator seems to be mocking which is unpleasant - and her main character is narrated in a quietly strong and sensible voice, such a welcome relief from the insipid voices all too often given to Mary Stewart novels. This is one of my favourites and it was a real joy to have it read in the way it deserves. Jenny Agutter's intonation and phrasing is perfect - such a treat. Only wish there was more as this version is heavily edited and it would be great to hear her read the whole novel along with some of the other titles. Airs Above the Ground would be great read by Agutter who would easily be able to use different voices to distinguish between the two main characters. I've just heard her read a snippet of I Capture the Castle where two different American voices are used and she did it perfectly so she should be a number one contender for a re-recording of The Ivy Tree which VERY BADLY needs doing!
Unfortunately this recording of Thornyhold is quite muffled in parts hence only 4* rating overall. I listen to it on small 'majority' speakers so am able to get a better sound output but it would be great to have a new recording done by Jenny Agutter of the entire novel ☺️.

refreshingly enjoyable narration
