Summary

As a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber pilot, John Muirhead led missions into northern Italy, Germany, and Bulgaria during World War II. Ultimately, he was shot down and taken prisoner.

John Muirhead's re-creation of those years is a breathtaking mingling of ravaging horrors and silent, surreal images; of raw, tumultuous memory and elegantly paced narrative; of lightening humor and measured reflection.

Seldom has a listener been made to feel terror so viscerally. Rarely has a listener ascended the skies so thrillingly. And never has one felt so close to the numbing fear, the boredom, the eerie beauty, and the dislocated sensibilities of war in the air as in Those Who Fall.

Great story

This was a first class war story told through the eyes of a young US airman. The experiences he encountered, the drama of aerial combat as German fighter aircraft swarmed in to attack B17 bombers . The sorrow of losing friends and the bravery of air crew facing German flack guns over German cities.

An absolutely superb audiobook

I was just browsing through the Audible catalogue not really sure what I wanted to listen too and then I came across this book. I thought to myself I'll give it 30 minutes and if I'm not keen I'll find myself another book to listen to instead. Well within 30 minutes I was completely hooked by the book. It's so well written that it's more like poetry than prose in some places.. The life of the prisoners in the concentration camp is horrific but don't let that put you off listening to the book though. Anyone interested in the 2nd World War will find something to learn in the book. I highly recommend and think that it's possibly the best audiobook I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. BTW the narration is brilliant as well . Well done Audible for making this superb available.

Filled with poetic imagery and drama, this is a book which would make an amazing film.

Amazing tech details.

Some technical details have been used in the story. It is accurate enough to make me believe the author was a military pilot himself. Also, few scenes described precisely brain capacity shrinkage during adrenaline rush and effects of flow in the perception of reality.

A really good piece of writing.

Good reading.

Excellent account of flying B17s in Italy

I have read many accounts of WW2 airmen's experiences . This has to be one of the best. It is on a par with Catch 22. At one point I had to check to see that it wasn't a novel. The writer expresses himself with sensitivity giving us a wonderful insight into his life as a B17 pilot. The narration is first class. I can heartily recommend this book.

I'm almost speechless

I've read or listened to many ww2 stories so I had no particular expectations when listening to this. I am now of the view it is the greatest piece of ww2 writing. I wanted it to go on and on ,I wanted to know what happened to his tent mates and his life on getting back home. I wanted to know everything.I thought the writing was wondrous and the narration exceptional in a calm measured way that enhanced the quality of the words. I often re listen to it when awake in the night " I'm like most men who soldiered for a while...... from marathon to chickamagua" it's exceptional.

Excellent.

I was hesitant at first about listening to this; but in fact it is more than worthwhile. A sold did reading, good story told with just the right amount of detail and an engaging listen.
