In Jütland verschwinden zwei Touristen während einer Wattwanderung spurlos. Polizist Peer Estrup geht der Vermisstenanzeige nach und trifft dabei auf Aktivistin Elly Østergard, die einem riesigen Umweltskandal auf der Spur ist. Wenig später tauchen Leichenteile im Watt auf. Offenbar wurden die beiden Touristen nach ihrem Tod in Säure aufgelöst. Doch was auf den ersten Blick wie ein perfides Gewaltverbrechen anmutet, entpuppt sich als ein schreckliches, übernatürliches Phänomen. Die Natur schlägt erbarmungslos zurück und verwandelt das dänische Wattenmeer in eine bestialische Todesfalle.
