About this listen

Two boys fall in love in a deadly world, but it's the secrets they keep that might kill them.

Seventeen-year-old Zach was visiting his uncle in a small Montana town when a mysterious illness ripped through the world. Most died, but those who survived the Infection became mindless killers, spreading the disease with a single scratch. Now, a year later, civilization lies in ruins, and Zach is the town's sole survivor. Desperately lonely, he longs to return to his family in Seattle, but his fears hold him captive.

Eighteen-year-old Aiden is on a critical mission for the covert Scientific Collective, delivering vials whose contents could cure the Infection. Tortured by his boyfriend's death, he welcomes the risks of the perilous journey. When a militia attacks Aiden, he flees to Zach's town.

The boys escape together and soon form a bond as they comfort each other in this desolate and broken world. The farther they travel, the more their affection grows, as do the forces pulling them apart. But their greatest threats are the secrets they keep. Zach hides details of his uncles death, and Aiden conceals the vials sinister origins. In order to survive, they'll have to confront the truths that could tear their love apart.

This was everything I wanted

the voice acting is superb and the VA really gives all of the characters a unique personality and makes them seem like real individuals. I love their performance throughout.

The writing made me cry repeatedly and laugh and get giddy from how sweet it was.

I'll be listening to this again soon.

A thrilling fast paced read.

The apocalypse is here - leading way for humans to be cold and callous but within this new world co-survivors Aiden and Zach have a budding romance.
While dealing with everything the infected apocalyptic world throws at them - Zach and Aiden must also face their past, if they want to push forward or survive.

my first 5 star read in a while, and first 5 star read of the year!

narrator does a fantastic job, especially with Aidens voice. uggghh ❤️

Disappointing!

Regrettably, 'Together in a Broken World' whilst enjoyable enough is very average and highly typical of it's kind; the performance was the publication's strongest feature, whereas - the characterisation is extremely weak.

The most interesting parts of a post-apocalyptic fiction, to my mind, are the moral dilemmas the characters must face in their new world - are they prepared to adapt and survive; and then having behaved in a way beyond conventional [pre-apocalyptical] social norms, and regardless of how justifiable these actions within the new circumstances, how is their humanity affected.

This title is singly missing these components, the protagonists are able to behaved without the necessity of breaching civilised moral and social codes; indeed, not only is the idea of killing another person (the ultimate taboo), in order to achieve a greater goal, protect a loved-one or even in reasonable self-defence, etc., is almost unthinkable - in fact, the two central characters can't even consider shooting a dog.

Without these extra dimensions the narrative loose impact and dramatic dynamics and is, in the end, the story of two lads walking in the woods!

Likewise, and to a wider problem with literature of this type - invariably, it seems, the main protagonists are emotionally, ideological, intellectual and temperamental, etc., suited.

There isn't, therefore, the need for discovery, compromise and adaptation, etc., the complete absence of conflict is hugely disappointing as it removes, at a stroke, any tension in the plot - the heroes are always going to end in each other arms and live happily-ever-after.

It is not necessary for the characters to be insanely at odds (although - the notion of a libertian, Mormon, introvert and a communism, diabolist, extrovert does appeal) but, a certain diversity of beliefs, feelings and thoughts, etc., would be more interesting than the dull sameness which appears to be the stock-in-trade for authors/publishers of this sort of book.
