About this listen
Twenty-nine-year-old Rayann Germaine, betrayed by her lover, flees in grief and rage. She meets book-store owner Louisa Thatcher, a woman many years her senior, who offers shelter and work...and soon, passion, and a loving place in her life.
But Rayann encounters challenges to this new love - from friends who question its wisdom, from her mother who disapproves of this liaison with a woman her own contemporary, from Louisa's son who learns for the first time his mother's true sexuality.
And there are profound differences between Rayann and Louisa themselves, two women who come from dramatically different places in the spectrum of age and life experience. Their only common ground seems to be the searing attraction that they both try to deny....

A teasing age-gap romance
Wow - I’ve read (or listened) to a few books by Karen Kallmaker but this is my favourite yet.
I loved this and probably because I can relate totally to Louisa; the 56 year old who remained closeted from friends and family for many years carrying fear of the consequences of her sexuality being discovered. Sadly unlike Louisa I don’t have a 29 lover who adores me…dream on.
And yes I’m still in love with Angela Dawe’s voice too.

The impact of time
The age difference between the characters in this book is primarily used as a vehicle to consider the changes 20 plus years has meant to the acceptance of lesbianism and what that has meant to how lives can be lived. This is a thoughtful and thought provoking read and well worth the time.

Another good one from Karin Kallmaker
KK is such an excellent writer for getting across feelings. I love her books and this has an added interesting dynamic. Audible should definitely record the follow up - Watermark - as it is bound to be another hit. Angela Dawe is a good narrator and I would like to rate her 4.5 out of 5 for her narration here. She brings a lot of positives to the story but, imo, she needs to develop a younger sounding voice for younger characters.
My eyesight is failing and I cannot read a whole novel, so PLEASE AUDIBLE can we have WATERMARK as an audiobook soon?

Outstanding
I have never read this book before but if I had it would already be in my top 5! If anybody is going to give a great story it’s worth in narration it’s Angela Dawe. Louisa’s voice is knee tremblingly gooood. Truly outstanding and now in my top 5 audiobooks for re-listens.

Lovely slow burner!
This is a great lingering story. A lovely, slow build relationship and a mixture of characters makes this a beautiful 'must read' story.

Cringey throughout
The narration was nice - pleasant to listen to. However the story Angela had to work with was sickly sweet. Quite weird. I’ve been in a relationship with a woman nearly twice my age - this story made we cringe throughout it. Mmmh. My least favourite wlw book I’ve listened to.
