Emery Hazard and his partner, John-Henry Somerset, have solved their first case together. The brutal murders that rocked the quiet town of Wahredua have been put to rest. Hazard, however, finds his life has only grown more complicated as he adjusts to his new home. Living with Somers, whom he has been drawn to since high school, makes "complicated" the understatement of the year.

The turmoil of living together spills over when Hazard and Somers find themselves trapped by the weather in an old mansion and, against Hazard's better judgment, sharing a bed. Strictly as friends, of course. Just when things can't get any more confusing, the next morning brings a worsening storm - and a murder.

Cut off from the outside world, Hazard and Somers must face a clever, determined killer who is hiding among the mansion's guests. Without backup, they can only rely on their wits - and on each other - to survive. And as the snow falls and the mansion's guests continue to die one by one, solving the string of murders becomes secondary. First, Hazard and Somers have to survive.

I was hooked after the first instalments of the complex mystery involving police detectives Emery Hazard and his partner, John-Henry Somerset. After putting the ghosts of the past behind them, and learning to work together, the two men struggle with the strong emotions they have had for each other since they were teenagers despite Hazard being in a new relationship with his boyfriend Rico and Somers trying to repair his marriage to his wife Cora.
Over the Thanksgiving holiday the partners find themselves cut off from the outside world in an old mansion due to a flood then blizzard and the following murder/mystery is reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s ‘Then there were none’ but on a much more complex and exciting scale.
I understand that there are a total of 6 books so far in this series and I just hope that the rest are made available on audible and that Tristan James continues to Narrate them.

This is complicated. If you are looking for straight forward mm romance this series will not be for you, unless you are in for the long haul. You need to have read book one to understand Hazard and Somerset's relationship, in which they can hurt one another without even trying but also to get a handle on the town. For as well as the current nasty set of crimes, some unlikeable people, there is some spillover from their last case.

Gregory Ashe writes a tight story that does not allow for napping. Hazard and Somerset are characters you can't but help to care for and cheer on. Real characters and a good crime story.

If I could I would give 6 stars for the audible book as Tristan James has really captures both Hazard and Somerset. ( Not to be missed)

It's Complicated

One of the principal characters in this book is the weather. Rain, wind, snow, blizzards, and cold, so much cold, dominate. In some ways, the weather drives the plot. Descriptions are vivid and varied - Gregory Ashe must've raided a thesaurus and his imagination. For me, it's almost the best part. The country house-style plot is suitably complex. Somers and Hazard are still finding their feet. But it's the weather that does it for me.

Having read many G.A. books several times I have now decided to listen to them as my eyesight isn't what it was. I'm delighted the narrator is so good otherwise I wouldn't listen If just make the fonts bigger

A well written story with and interesting  concept.  The characters are likeable and the narration is very good.

I simply cannot understand all the good reviews of Tristan James. His voice has a nice tenor but every sentence is read in the same inflection it's so boring. He can't do any of the different voices so it is very confusing to understand who is speaking, He frequently mispronounces words and more often misses the sense of a whole sentence. I mean this is his job. How can Audible keep choosing readers who can't do a half-decent job? After all that is their job. Audible's continual failure to promote good production values is a constant mystery to me.

As for the plot - it is completely ridiculous. These 2 have phones. It is not 1990. They have access to ooooh, I don't know, the intent, social media.

It is such a shame because I like the characters but there's no excuse for the poor plot and poor reading.
