About this listen

For sheer storytelling delight and pure adventure, Treasure Island has never been surpassed. From the moment young Jim Hawkins first encounters the sinister Blind Pew at the Admiral Benbow Inn until the climactic battle for treasure on a tropic isle, the nevel creates scenes and characters that have firetd the imaginations of generations of readers. Written by a superb prose stylist, a master of both action and atmosphere, the story centers upon the conflict between good and evil - but in this case a particularly engaging form of evil. It is the villainy of that most ambiguous rogue Long John Silver that sets the tempo of this tale of treachery, greed, and daring.

Designed to forever kindle a dream of high romance and distant horizons, Treasure Island is, in the words of G. K. Chesterton, "the realization of an ideal, that which is promised in its provocative and beckoning map; a vision not only of white skeletons but also green palm trees and sapphire seas." G. S. Fraser terms it "an utterly original book" and goes on to write: "There will always be a place for stories like Treasure Island that can keep boys and old men happy."

The story and performance are excellent (I am not even distracted by the American accent - the actor does a fine job). However, there are frequent moments where the audio has not been edited, leaving the actor repeating lines and pausing as in a raw recording.

Great, but for a lack of editing

Great story but very hard to follow due to terrible narrator and poor editing. Multiple passages are repeated, words are mispronounced and phrases wrongly emphasised. This makes it hard work to make sense of the great story.

Great story, terrible narrator

Thinking this would be a great one to listen to I swiftly downloaded it at 78p... That's 78p and 20 minutes of my life I'll never get back! Such a full narration of this great book. Shame.

Crikey, it'll put you to sleep

This is probably the worst read/produced book I have come across on Audible. I bought it because I hadn't ever read the story and didn't think an American voice would spoil what is supposed to be a good book too much. How wrong I was. Several lines were repeated through sloppy editing and the narration was really bad. The reading was almost completely without expression, the dialogues were beyond his capabilities and the mispronunciations (taking account of American pronunciations) really grated. Don't be tempted.

Not even worth the small price

A small handful of sentences oddly repeated themselves (failed takes accidentally left in?) but still very good audiobook overall, especially for the low price.

Good with slight errors

Very much enjoy listening to a great classic. Not as well narrated as by Stephen Fry, then again, who does. It has got a bit of ye olde english wording that some may not like, but personally think it is an easy listen.

Good bedtime listening
