I have both read and listened to this series three times, and still relish the characters, the stories within the story and although Catholic, love the intertwining the Talmudic analysis of the accompanying problems and the beautifully explained related religious elements. Beautifully narrated too.

David Small sticks his neck out again... It's interesting to look back to the time I was a student myself, although clearly UK universities are very different and I now know why in the USA places of study for those 17-21 year olds are called "schools" - this one at least is more a sixth-form college than a beacon of higher education! The Rabbi solves another crime of classical design (no gruesome forensics, exceptional cruelty or sickening descriptions (thank the Lord), but he also learns about young people and teaching. He can be just a little bit dogmatic....

This series is not only a fascinating detective series, with original and innovative plots, it is also an intriguing look at Judaism. For those people who know little or nothing about Judaism, this is a fascinating yet unobtrusive insight into what Jews believe (& more importantly, don't believe).

Don't read this if you are likely to be offended by religious references or belief systems that are not your own. Because if you aren't open minded to others beliefs, this is going to upset you - if though it is first and foremost a murder mystery series.
