For Eliza, it's one of escape - a harrowing flight north with her young son. For Uncle Tom, sent down the Mississippi River, it's a more certain fate, as he struggles to survive against the brutal exploitation of his traders.

As the single most popular novel of its era, Stowe's volatile work of protest fiction fueled the abolitionist cause in the 1850s. The book personalized the plight of slavery in a way that political speeches and newspapers could not. Stowe's humanistic approach ignited a national argument, one credited by historians as a key contributor to the outbreak of the Civil War.

Buck Schiner is a master of the narrated text. I felt completely beguiled by his voices throughout the book. The 45 chapters is not an easy read as the themes within this book bare the harsh realities of man's inhumanity to man.
I can see why it was a best seller during the Victorian era.
I highly recommend this version.

The story uses words and language that were acceptable at the time of writing but are quite shocking to modern ears. Written as an anti slavery novel it certainly illustrates the desperate and frequently inhumane quality of the slaves lives. Harriet Beecher Stowe describes the slaves as generally more Christian and forgiving than their so called Christian masters, it was banned in the Southern States as being pro abolitionist. It is frequently difficult to listen to and the thought of a glorious after life for the good, Christian slaves may be rather more comfort to them than it is to me. I think it is an important work however, and I'm very glad to have listened to it.
