About this listen

Darren Hayes was always a storyteller. As a child, in suburban Queensland in the 1970s, he told himself he was going to be a pop star - and he did it. Throughout Savage Garden's astonishing success - which included multiple Australian number 1s, cracking the US charts and selling more than 35 million albums worldwide - he kept telling us stories of love and longing, through his vulnerable, open song lyrics.

But the reality of his life was much more complicated than the constraints of a three-minute pop song.
In Unlovable, for the first time, Darren recounts the events and circumstances that shaped his unique life: from the childhood trauma of growing up with a violent, alcoholic father, his journey with depression, to the dizzying heights of worldwide fame in Savage Garden, and everything in between.

Told in his own lyrical words, Unlovable is a magical dark fairytale that reclaims the terrors and obstacles of his past to reveal the fabulous artist he has become.

Moving & touching personal story. This is the quickest I have ever finished an audio book because I was so engrossed in the story telling. Huge fan of Darren Hayes and his book has deepened my admiration even more !

After being a fan of Darren’s since 1999 I thought I ‘knew’ everything but wow…it was a heart wrenching story and some of the parts made me gasp and feel sad he’s been treated so badly by people he thought he could trust. It lovely that it’s been spoken by Darren himself, will listen to this again

A beautifully told story

Having seen Darren perform on many occasions it was wonderful to listen to his story, told in a truly honest emotional way…..although almost 14 hours long…it flew by. Thanks Darren

Truly emotional - thanks Darren

I laughed and cried listening to this incredibly honest story. I'm so glad Darren had the courage to write this memoir. I just want to hug him and hold him tight. Loved that he narrated it himself. Such a shame, though, his beautiful Australian accent has been affected by an American one.

The rawness of this book is simply astounding it does require a few breaks to gather your thoughts but ultimately this is not just a book but its ART. I’m not normally one for showing emotion but the depth that Darren goes into to describing his life makes you feel like you lived it with him. 10/10 would recommend even if your not a fan of his music be mindful that this is a human being putting his life out in public view.

Deep in my soul

Comes across as though it hasn't been edited by anyone except Darren, and as though it is written 100% in his own words, as though he is sitting in the same room as you, reminiscing.

Darren has such an amazing way of describing everything, especially as the vast majority of it must have been excruciatingly painful to talk about.

I cried sad tears when Darren talked about the deaths of Benny, Colin and Gary, and cried happy tears when he said that his mum still had the innocence that she'd had before the abuse ever started. R.I.P. Judy, you don't know me, but I can see how very much you loved your children. Your love may have been the only thing to have prevented the same thing happening to Darren as happened to Benny.

it deserves all the stars in the sky.

I wish Darren well.

Excellent storytelling

I've been a fan since 1998. Ever since I've heard "I want you", but mostly with "To the moon and back". Every single song spoke to my soul and even more with Affirmation. I thought we were connected in a way I couldn't explain.
Listening to Unlovable, I can understand so much now. Darren's magical genius and power to speak to my soul and millions of others... has a painful and dark past.
This is the journey of a brave and beautiful soul through hell and back.
Thank you Darren.

Lovable forever
