 Im zweiten Teil der Millennium-Trilogie von Stieg Larsson ist Lisbeth Salander zunächst spurlos verschwunden. Mikael Blomkvist versucht vergeblich, mit ihr in Kontakt zu treten, doch Lisbeth weilt versteckt auf Grenada. In Stockholm überschlagen sich plötzlich die Ereignisse: Zwei Mitarbeiter der Zeitschrift Millennium werden brutal erschossen. Sie arbeiteten an einer Enthüllungsstory über Mädchenhandel und Prostitution - eine Geschichte, die bis in höchste Regierungskreise reicht.

Kurz bevor die beiden Journalisten ermordet werden, kehrt Lisbeth Salander zurück, und prompt fällt der Verdacht auf sie. Auch Nils Erik Bjurman, der Mann, der sie einst sadistisch vergewaltigte und zu ihrem Vormund erklärt wurde, wird umgebracht. Eine mörderische Hetzjagd auf Salander beginnt. Mikael Blomkvist versucht, ihre Unschuld zu beweisen. Aber er kann nicht ahnen, dass er gegen die Geister aus Lisbeths Vergangenheit kämpft.
