Summary
Lights, magic, murder!
A movie stuntman dies performing a stunt on location, but the police call it an accident. His girlfriend Angela is a low-level wizard, and when she finds a witch's spent hex bag at the crime scene, she knows it's murder.
Jonathan Shade and Kelly Chan take the case and go undercover to do stunts for the movie while they track down the murderer, but as always, not everything is what it seems.
Vertigo Effect is loaded with action, magic, humor, danger, witches, wizards, Esther the ghost, movie stars, and fun. Listen to it today!

Something different in Jonathan Shade's world
Jonathan, Kelly and Esther are in the movie world in this, the eighth Jonathan Shade book. This one starts well but I was a little disappointed to find another "immortality spell" driving things. The author has researched the movie industry well as some of those jobs you see on the closing credits become clear. Additionally, the plot steers away from the old faithful "sword and sorcery" line and was a step up from previous volumes in this series. Top marks for effort; shame about the immortality spell.
The narrator has done a good job across all eight novels in this series; I've read other books narrated by Joe Hempel and he always delivers a good story.

Lights, camera and plenty of action
I really enjoyed this book. This is book eight and so far the latest Jonathan Shade book (when is the rest coming to audible?) So I have been putting it off until I needed something exciting to get lost in. I started it today and was only going to listen to a little bit, four hours later I had finished the book. The story didn't disappoint and I was hooked. I must admit I have been getting lost in this series with all the time travel or alternative realities but this book was back to Jonathan at his best, solving and fighting magical crimes. I loved the plot with Jonathan and Kelly as stunt doubles and it certainly went in a different direction to what I was expecting towards the end. The comradery between the characters that has been sadly lacking in the last couple of books is beginning to come back, which in my opinion is what makes this a great series and I am eagerly awaiting the next book.
Jonathan and Kelly are going in undercover as stuntmen when a friend asks them to investigate the apparent accidental death of a stuntman working on a bit budget film. Even with the death caught on camera the police still came it to be an accident , it is only when his girlfriend shows Jonathan the hex bag that he turns his skills to finding a killer rather than staring in a movie.
I really like the narrator and think he puts in an amazing performance as Jonathan and friends. His soothing voice made the hours just fly by. When witches, ghosts and senator's are involved things are going to get tricky.

All the King's horses and all the King's men.
At last, Jonathan, Kelly and let's not forget Esther, are back and on a case: the death of a stuntman which everyone other than his fiancee believes is accidental. But she is convinced it was murder and, being a low level wizard, she knows an hex bag when she sees one.
The Jonathan Share stories are always a pleasure: great supernatural stories with lots of action but still plenty of time for humour and personality development. Narration is by the excellent Joe Hempel, always a pleasure to hear, giving a perfectly paced performance and breathing even more life into the various characters (even those that might be dead!) with panache and obvious enjoyment. A fine performance.
A always a pleasure, Vertigo Effect is another fun, fantasy listen and highly recommended to all who enjoy the genre. My thanks to the rights holder who, at my request freely, gifted me with a complimentary copy. Such fun
