About this listen

If the destruction of Earth and extinction of humanity were imminent, how far would you go to survive? Would you kill your body to save your mind?

Jack Mitchel is willing to risk everything to survive the apocalypse — including his essential humanity.

An EMT in 2042 San Diego, Jack knows he won't survive the impact of the massive asteroid hurtling towards Earth. After all, he's not one of the handful of lucky lottery winners scheduled for rescue. But he did luck into a NexGenVR capsule, which means Jack can risk a one-way trip to the virtual reality world of Viridan Gate Online, a completely immersive online multiplayer fantasy role-playing game, or RPG.

The transition to Viridian Gate Online (V.G.O.) is irreversible, and will kill Jack's corporeal form. And once players transition fully into the world of V.G.O., the risks aren't over — from cutthroat fellow players to greedy developers eager to replicate the wealth discrepancies of Earth in virtual reality, V.G.O. is just as dangerous as the 'real world' was. If Jack can’t game the system, he’s going to be trading in a quick death for a long, brutal one....

LitRPG books combine tropes and themes from role-playing games with sci-fi and fantasy elements to tell a unique story that's exciting and super-relevant to today's world. Jack's adventures in a cutthroat virtual reality fantasy world will grip fans of Ready Player One and The Stormlight Archive alike. With over 200,000 copies sold, this is one series you don't want to miss!

Good, not the best.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

a few sniggers. a bit too much tell rather than show at times.

Any additional comments?

A bit too much power levelling, even before the story based justification for it. B grade. comes in about 10 of my top 10 books, spots 1-6 being Aleron Kong's

Big fan!

I was looking for something to fill the void whilst waiting for new instalments in Chaos Seeds, The Realms, SAM and Eden’s Gate, and boy am I glad I found this!

Great main character to cheer for, interesting setting, lots of progression and not bogged down in stats or status updates like others. I’m hooked and excited for the next one!

Awesome to listen to!

I play a lot of online games, World of Warcraft specifically... I'm a big fan of the anime series Sword Art Online and also enjoy Log Horizon for their depiction of Virtual Worlds for gamers and the like. This book is a audible book that lets you delve into another world created to a similar premise as the things mentioned. Very enjoyable to listen to and engaging book, good start to what will hopefully be a great series! I will buy the next one soon!

Quiet Shouting

The character does a lot of shouting in this story and the narrator fails miserably to capture any shouting and the voice used is actually quieter than the MC normal speaking voice. Also the narrator fails to capture the feminine sound of any characters whether it be a human or monster so the story didn't really grip me as well as "The Land" audiobooks do.

An unexpected journey

I have to admit that I was hesitant to buy the book, it felt like it was not my style, from narration to the plot. but I decided against my judgement and jumped right in. it's a refreshing take on the litRPG genre where it's less about gaming but more about living in a VR Game world, unlike most other where it's about surviving until you get back to real life. The narration grew quickly on me and I started to see quickly why they chose him. There was one part where I could have sworn the narrator's voice changed completely. that's why I am not giving a 5 star on performance, but it didn't affect the mood that much.

The first time

This is the first time I've listened to a lit rpg and I must say I was fearful that I wasn't going to like it... I thought why would I listen to an rpg instead of playing it, well let me say that I understand why now you should definitely give this a go.
