Bernardo di Chiaravalle, fu un monaco e abate francese cistercense, fondatore della celebre abbazia di Clairvaux e di altri monasteri. Viene venerato come santo dalla Chiesa cattolica. Canonizzato nel 1174 da papa Alessandro III, fu dichiarato Dottore della Chiesa, da papa Pio VIII nel 1830. Nel 1953 papa Pio XII gli dedicò l'enciclica Doctor Mellifluus. Questo racconto della vita si San Bernardo è stato scritto dal sacerdote Giulio Barberis, nel 1890. A conclusione dell’opera, quattro preghiere di Bernardo di Chiaravalle.
