About this listen

A Green Beret's gripping memoir of American Special Forces in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War.

In 1970, on his second tour to Vietnam, Nick Brokhausen served in Recon Team Habu, CCN. Officially, it was known as the Studies and Observations group. In fact, this Special Forces squad, which Brokhausen calls "an unwashed, profane, ribald, joyously alive fraternity", undertook some of the most dangerous and suicidal reconnaissance missions ever in the enemy-controlled territory of Cambodia and Laos.

But they didn't infiltrate the jungles alone. They fought alongside the Montagnards - oppressed minorities from the mountain highlands, trained by the US military in guerrilla tactics, armed, accustomed to the wild, and fully engaged in a war against the North Vietnamese.

Together, this small unit formed the backbone of ground reconnaissance in the Republic of Vietnam, racking up medals for valor - but at a terrible cost.

graphic, funny as hell, riveting, thought provoking, brutal

What a crazy time to ride through the Nam. Honest insights on the joviality and somewhat carefree yet survivalist mentality of the soilders in deadly tropical paradise.

It doesn't spend 6 hrs rehashing bloody boot camp

I've listened to some shit in my time, some of it has bored me to tears. But not this book. It's not a history lecture, nor a list of faceless names (although respect to those names) and places I can't pronounce. Call me a uneducated heathen. A thoroughly enjoyable listen. Author does a superlative job. Voice suited to the job.

Tales from Nam

I love a good Nam book. This is one of those, not the very best but certainly worth a listen; though don't expect deep analysis of men at war or the ethics of the conflict. Rather breezy and often darkly amusing stories of special forces ops and japes, which I think relates to the way in which soldiers must have kept themselves sane throughout that senseless conflict. Narrated well enough, kept my attention. Overall a thumbs up.

Darkly Funny

Nick Brockhausen's book is a captivatingly dark but humorous book, a must read for ex forces and serving forces alike, and for everyone else who can break from the comfortable shackles of their day to day existence and transport themselves with Nick to where, and who he was!

Be introduced to Mac, Cookie, Mains and and a dedicated band of 'Little People' you will be grateful were on the side of America during this war! Your insertion into Special Forces Vietnam is not gentle, this book and the excellent oration puts you right 'THERE' with them, lucky for you it's for observation only!

Brilliant

Very intelligent funny writer. I guess you had to have a sense of humour to remain sane in those circumstances. I wish Nick would write more books. He could write a book about a rock and it would be interesting, funny and well written
