 Ramana Maharishi war erst 21 Jahre alt, als er die Grundlage für das Büchlein "Nan Yar? Wer bin ich?" schuf, ohne dass er je die Absicht hatte, ein Buch über seine Lehre zu schreiben. Er wohnte in einer Höhle auf dem Arunachala. Obwohl er in jener Zeit nicht sprach, fühlten die Menschen instinktiv, dass er ein Weiser war und kamen mit ihren spirituellen Fragen und Problemen zu ihm. Einer von ihnen war Sivaprakasam Pillai, ein Philosoph, der bei einer Finanzbehörde beschäftigt war. In den Büchern, die er studiert hatte, konnte er auf seine existentiellen Fragen "Wer bin ich?" keine Antwort finden.

1902 besuchte er den Maharshi auf dem Berg und stellte ihm seine brennenden Fragen. Ramana schrieb die Antwort entweder auf dem Boden oder mit Kreide auf Schiefer. Pillai schrieb sich die Fragen und Antworten nachträglich aus dem Gedächtnis auf. Seine Sammlung wurde jedoch erst 1923 als Frage- und Antworten-Version veröffentlicht. Ramana hat wenige Jahre später davon eine Essay-Version verfasst.

"Wer bin ich?" gilt als eines der grundlegendsten Werke Ramana Maharshis und enthält die Quintessenz dessen, was er sein Leben lang lehrte. Das Büchlein wurde im Ashram so billig wie möglich verkauft und Neuankömmlingen als erste Lektüre empfohlen, da es eine hervorragende Einführung in die Praxis der Selbstergründung ist...
