About this listen

This deeply personal and supportive series offers listeners an honest and relatable insight into how some the UK’s best-known celebrities have coped with mental health difficulties, ranging from OCD to insomnia, addiction to grief, and depression to anxiety.

Having experienced her own mental health difficulties, with depression and self-harm, Dame Kelly Holmes sets out to discover how other people cope. She joins each guest in a place that makes them feel good: taking a spin class with presenter Davina McCall, baking with comedian Catherine Bohart, and playing the bagpipes with journalist Alastair Campbell in his bathroom.

Each episode concludes with an expert insight from mental health professionals, Dr David Crepaz-Keay from the Mental Health Foundation and psychotherapist Owen O'Kane, including information about seeking professional help.

Dame Kelly’s other guests include journalist Jon Ronson, author Philip Pullman, comedians Eddie Izzard, Felicity Ward and Rory Bremner, transgender rights activist Munroe Bergdorf and musician Amanda Palmer.

The concept is good but…

The concept of this audiobook is really good, and extremely interesting but unfortunately Kelly Holmes voice and accent I found very irritating and difficult to listen to. I admire her as an athlete and in her endeavours to overcome her mental issues and for putting this concept together.

Brilliantly helpful

Listening to everyone’s experiences of mental health has allowed me to normalise my experiences when I have been ill, I suffer from chronic pain which, at times can be so Acute I cannot move. CRPS. Exercise can be hard if not impossible but it’s the drive to get through it.
I can’t thank you enough for sharing.

...A Healthy Look at Mental Health!

Absolutely brilliant! Well structured program - beautifully honest, positive conversation. Superb presentation.
Also gently highlights to the listener that we all have mental health - even media stars! ...this looks at how different people manage their mental health... Superb and inspired idea for a program! Thank you Kelly.

Well

After a terrifying two years I can truly say it was a pleasure to hear some very well known people open up and explain their fears misconceptions, anxiety and mental health problems.

Hearing how people have felt and coped and Dame Kelly having a proactive natural flow, her choices of where to interview were very interesting.

I felt this book has imparted some knowledge to me, you don’t just learn and I feel a little less alone on that weary travelled road.

Thank you for all being so open and honest.
It deserves all its 5 stars and I’ve already recommended it to some friends.

Brilliant. Absorbing, truthful and heart rendering whilst wonderfully illuminating.

Mike x

A cure for insomniacs.

Really not my cup of tea, I was hoping it would be an insight into the struggle of mental health but it was actually just the author interviewing people and then turning their story’s into all about herself.
There are a lot better books to listen to from ex Olympians, lucky it was a free download. Such a shame.

A Scripted chat of god know who?

Very unprofessional production.
It’s more of a casual interview and also there is so much loud music in it you’ll immediately stop listening and delete it from your library. Half the time you don’t even understand what they are trying to convey because the interview doesn’t really know to interview and just when you think you have managed to grasp what they are telling , all of a sudden out of nowhere the music just explodes into your ears and guess what it’s not over it’s just a break between the parts. The production is totally unprofessional because I have to constantly change the volume depending on who is speaking and also again the music comes out of nowhere and it’s way louder than the actors voice. Some episodes the interviewer voice is loud and in some episodes it’s low, they are constantly laughing and expression like uhhh cheesy and stuff like that makes it just boring. I guess the mike was kept too close and in some you can tell that the actor is moving close or away from it and the mike guy seems to try too hard to capture every sound coming out of them and the music in between makes it worse . This book in no way will help you have a sound mind because it’s just pure agony from the start till the end of each episode.
