About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Can a person literally die of loneliness? Is there a connection between the ability to express emotions and Alzheimer's disease? Is there such a thing as a 'cancer personality'?

Drawing on deep scientific research and Dr Gabor Maté's acclaimed clinical work, When the Body Says No provides the answers to critical questions about the mind-body link - and the role that stress and our emotional makeup play in an array of common diseases.

When the Body Says No

  • Explores the role of the mind-body link in conditions and diseases such as arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, irritable bowel syndrome and multiple sclerosis.
  • Shares dozens of enlightening case studies and stories, including those of people such as Lou Gehrig (ALS), Betty Ford (breast cancer), Ronald Reagan (Alzheimer's), Gilda Radner (ovarian cancer) and Lance Armstrong (testicular cancer).
  • Reveals 'The Seven A's of Healing': principles in healing and the prevention of illness from hidden stress.

it has really punch home the importance of repressed emotions when dealing with matters of health. I have begun a journey of ensuring I have a more wholesome approach to viewing my past and present in hope of having a healthier future. Thank you Gabor.

This book made me realise so much about myself that I am now working on. I feel empowered in the face of illness, adversity, death, loss.

Life changing

I am amazed at the bad reviews, having just finished this book. People seemed incensed at the idea of it, as though the author were blaming any person for their illness. I didn’t see that at all. I saw real life studies being referred to that seem to suggest some connection between stress and the body’s response to it. It’s highly informative and raw. I thoroughly enjoyed this. There was no “forcing this theory down your throat”. Just a “have you considered the effect that…might have on your body?” Highly recommend. It is, however, quite a heavy read. You need to be in the right frame of mind for it.

A lot of food for thought

Breathtaking! I was taking notes all the time. Learned so much. Experiences that were haunting me, now I can get to understand more. To forgive. To grow. This book is eye opener.

All of us should read this one.

This book is a send by the universe because it explained so much to me so clearly about how we carey events through our life. I cannot wait to read more work from Gabor Mate. His collection of information is amazing!

I have known for quite some time about the connection between the body, the mind and chronic illness. Dr Gabor Mate explains this to the reader in detail providing both medical and social explanations with actual patient examples. His style of writing makes it very easy for any reader to fully grasp his teaching. I REALLY enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the other titles in his library.

Amazing, informative, easy reading.

it's a page turner and not so much, just because you need to properly digest the information. at least that's how it was for me - it took me a couple of months to finish it, though cannot say I listened to it every day.
highly recommend it to those interested in the subject of psychology/neuroscience/psychotherapy - it's not very technical so the info should be easy to grasp by the average Joe/Joanne ☺️
painful to hear the stories at times, but overall I really enjoyed it.

great book, but take your time
