About this listen

Private investigator Jasmine Shar has been hired to find Tessa Garrion, a young woman who has vanished without trace. What begins as a simple search awakens a malevolence that has lain dormant for three decades. As Jasmine uncovers a hidden history of sex, drugs, ritualism, and murder, she realises she may need a little help from the dark side herself if she's going to get to the truth.

Loved this! Great narration, great story! Characters are 3d and believable. Pacing was fast but not rushed

Anither brookmyre classic

I really enjoyed the book, the last 4 hours I could not put it away. The narrator has very sharp "S"es but you get used to it after a while.

great story!

Chris Brookmyre never uses just one word when he can use 200+. There is far, far too much telling and not a lot of showing in this book — but it's decent basic storytelling, even if it lacks lightness of touch. I'm not a fan of the gothic and horror film genres, which CB obviously is, so this probably wasn't the best choice for me.

Don't know if it was just me, but I found it very difficult to remember who was who among the vast cast of actors and film directors we were introduced to. I felt as if I needed to write a list of them for reference. He describes people in detail but they are all rather interchangeable, so the plot, which twisted around nicely, was quite difficult to follow at times. Lots of coincidences, lots of people turning up unexpectedly. Jasmine, our heroine, has a terrible tendency to go all weak at the knees and get faint when threatened and after a while it gets irritating and one wonders whether life wouldn't be better for her if she went to work in Frasers and left PI-ing to someone a bit more robust.

Sarah Barron does a great job with all the different accents and tones and speech patterns. I have no idea whether they are accurate, but they helped this listener distinguish the different characters. She brings warmth and depth to the narration and Brookmyre is lucky to have her.

Entertaining whodunnit hogwash, splendidly read

I have wanted to read a Chris Brookmyre for a while and bought this when it was on offer.
The narration was terrible - the narrator sounded like she was half asleep and her voice made it sound like there were far too many words to listen to.
Didn't finish it - didn't even get close

narration was dreadful

Not sure if I'll recommend the depicting of Jasmine as a slightly wavering and simpering wee lassie. I always hear her in my head as a more confident if very self aware young woman.

Good twists and turns.

Chris Brookmyre does a nice job of following up on Where the Bodies are Buried, giving enough of a reminder for listeners (like me) who can't recall all of the details without retreading too much ground. Overall the plot of When the Devil Drives was a little convoluted in comparison to Where the Buried. While neither book was exactly harsh realism, this feels a little more Agatha Christie and a bit less Ian Rankin. Personally, I rather enjoyed that aspect of it though.

Jasmine Sharp and Glen Fallon continue to make for entertaining company and while the conclusion was in some respects predictable, it nevertheless felt well-crafted.

Solid follow-up to Where the Bodies are Buried

Enjoyed listening to this story after reading it a few years ago. The narrator is very good and I like the way she read the story.

Gripping tale

So glad I found a new author ( for me !)great read such a wonderful twists and turns . Worth reading in order, as you really get an affinity with the characters.

Great book

Plenty twists, but many not believable…. Almost gave it up, but ploughed on until the end…. There is a third book which I downloaded before starting no2…. Might get to it when I run out of other books… but won’t be rushing ….

Not up to his usual standards- was a bit like my knitting- full of holes….

With a limited number of suspects it seemed incredible that I could not suspect, even for a moment, the right one. It kept me glued and intrigued. I was suitably misdirected and entertained so can throughly recommend the book - story, performance et al.
