About this listen

“Poland has not yet perished while still we live.”

English girl Sheila Matthews accepts an invitation to holiday in Poland, the country where her father died in mysterious circumstances. When German bombers begin pounding Warsaw, she decides against returning home and is recruited by the Polish underground. Playing a dangerous game as a double agent, Sheila must use all her skill to stay one step ahead of the Gestapo. But soon the Germans begin to suspect her and she flees to the forest, to be reunited with the enigmatic Captain Adam Wisniewski, now a wanted partisan.

Stalked by a ruthless Nazi officer, Sheila and Adam must decide where their loyalties lie: to the cause, or to one another.

Beautifully told story of wartime Poland

Beautifully told story of a part of Ww2 we on the UK don’t often hear about. The horrors of occupation and the bravery of ordinary people in the face of it.

Very realistic

This novel is very authentic; it was published in 1944, written by someone with real knowledge of secret service work. The novel gives a very realistic depiction of war and occupation. It is quite harrowing but I couldn’t stop listening because I cared about the characters and wanted to know how it would end. It is a very useful book for its historical detail. It has taught me a great deal about Poland and the Second World War (I already knew a lot about the war, but this book has taken my knowledge to a different level). It is very well written. Another good thing about this novel is that there is no sex, no obscenity, and no graphic violence. The heroes have good values and are truly admirable. The narrator is excellent – expertly interpreting all the voices both male and female – and the sound quality is perfect.

Wonderful story from a great writer

I am so pleased to see Helen MacInnes books on audible. This is a fine example of her work, set in Poland at the start of WW2. The story has everything - a chilling coverage of the siege of Warsaw, resistance groups in hiding and near escape from the Gestapo. The characters are well drawn and I found the story engaged me from beginning to end. Although the events covered are horrific MacInnes covers them without gory detail and there are no torrid sex scenes which I find a relief!

The narration is excellent.
